    GPS Laptimers?

Has anybody seen or know of something similar for Android?

Harry's LapTimer, the world’s #1 onboard video and timing app. Developed by drivers, for drivers, expect nothing but the best solution and first class support.

        That's a 1hz unit. I used Qstarz 818XT which is a 10Hz unit.

10Hz was putting out too much stuff for my HTC Desire HD to handle. Recorded time frame wasn't consistent. set the GPS to 5Hz solved the issue.

These apps look really cool. I hadn't even considered this before. Harry's Timer looks very thorough, but I cant seem to find a list of the programmed tracks.

I think it "learns" the track via GPS, so there isn't a list ?

To date, the online database has 195 predefined tracks
✦Track shapes and descriptions by geography
✦Certification allows distribution with high quality
✦Add your custom track definitions and share them with your friends

Yeah, it sounds like it has the ability to learn. I'll have to give it a try at my next track day on 5/7. Thanks for bringing this discussion up!

Being very familiar with GPS based data acquisition systems, I'd be very curious to see how these phone apps compare. I have a hard time believing that the accuracy and processing power is anywhere near the level of even the low-end DA systems, so doubt the usefulness beyond 'look how cool this is, I did a lap in x.xx.xxx!".

I have an Android phone, so I can't compare the Harry's timer. Anyone with a Traqmate or Race Technology and either Harry's or Trackaroo want to compare output between the DA system and the phone app?

I don't use a phone based lap timer but i use my Android's GPS for running and biking. It works fine - the accuracy depends on how fast it's set to update your location and how many satelites you're connected to (typically 5 is a "good" signal). Otherwise the main concern is battery life, not CPU power, but in a car you can just plug it in. There's also numerous lap timers to choose from, you don't need a fucking iPhone.. :p

smartphones are going to kill a lot of other devices - better believe it.

I've read that these are fairly accurate, but I plan on comparing the results with the official timer at the event. If it's very close I'll start using it, if it's off by a couple of .10 then it's not close enough but could still be used maybe to compare the lines or speeds I don't yet.

It's cheap enough where you can just try it and compare results, if it doesn't work great I can still use the external anyways :)

I just found out the Porsche Club I track with doesn't allow timing devices inside the car for insurance reasons :( Lame.

Who says they have to see it? Does it absolutely 100% need to be mounted to a windshield? I mean, what if you just keep the thing in your pocket? How much does your lower torso really move around when you're going around the track?
