E30 content... :)

This was a shakedown- first weekend out in this car. It needs a lot of work to be fast, not to mention safe.

Edit - struggling to get video to embed. If it doesn't work for you, try here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Aw7NaiSQ8

      I am.

I also need to know more about your car; start spillin the beans. I do recall seeing that it's M42 powered and turbo flared with 15x8's. Stock M42? Tire size/compound? It looks as if you've got it balanced quite well, what's your setup suspension wise? Oh, and moar pictures. My little M42 car is going to be run very similarly.

No in car BMW action, but this was at Laguna Seca in 2011. This was my first vintage road race in the Datsun. The red 33 car in front of me is a very well prepared 67.5 2000 that has been a race car since new. I finished the weekend 21 of 58 and beat the 33 car driven by a friend of mine.

A session of Buttonwillow during VARA University to get my race license. There is a little irony in this because the guy driving the blue and white 240Z in front of me was also the guy who taught me how to race criteriums on my bicycle while I was in college. Incidentally, the 240Z was originally built by BRE for another customer.

Slightly off-topic... what are you guys doing to embed the videos? The embed code on youtube doesn't seem to work, even if I stick the youtube hashtag thing around it... similarly, the base code doesn't work... Which code should I be pulling, and how should I format?

Embedding the video is harder than you would think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASpZtYiPr5Q This is the full link to my video above, but you have to cut the "ASpZtYiPr5Q" out of the URL link and place it in the [YOUTUBE) (Yes I changed the ] to a ) so you could see what I was talking about.) It should look like this but with the bracket fixed
            [YOUTUBE)ASpZtYiPr5Q

            Hope that helps.

Short answer is most of the answers to your questions are in the videos description :)

Long answer is the build thread here: http://www.maxbimmer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100089

Most of the relevant stuff you are looking for is about halfway through the thread, and onwards.

And just my opinions/random thoughts... I still think the suspension needs a lot of work to be perfect. I actually had 15x7s on that day instead of my regular 15x8s. Steering kickback is horrendous compared to the E30... I bet the 15x8s will be worse, but nothing I can do about it. Oh, and I still need to buy or make roll center spacers for the front... The rear tire wear is rather heavy IMO on the inner edges, I'd wager a guess on it being the toe since I still have everything in the stock locations, but running much lower than stock. I don't think the shocks are at their optimum for the car yet either, but I am consulting with the guy that I got my shocks from, I am sure he can help me set the car up better.

Whoops, I missed that description. I've gotten through a bit of that thread, but I'll have to finish it when I've got some more time to read through it. I'd like to see what you're doing with E30 brakes. I do like the idea of a G250 over a G240 with that 1:1 5th gear. If I end up keeping the M42 I'll throw one of those in there before it sees the track.

Perhaps part of the steering kickback issue is due to the steering box; a rack and pinion may curb that problem. At the very least I'll be swapping to a rack and pinion, but I'm more than likely going to be drastically modifying the geometry up front. I'd like to stay in touch with ya, not many fast guys out there are running 02's. I'm interested in knowing what you find out shock wise, are you happy with those spring rates? I know I'm not too far off your spring rate up front, but I've got no idea what I have in the back (which will probably end up a true coil-over anyways).

Anyhow, I'll actually make a contribution to this thread's original purpose.

I've been farting around with my Spec E30 in the DE's for a little while now. I'm actually quite happy that I've been running mid-pack times, about 2-3 seconds off the really fast guys, and that's with some very used up RR's. So hopefully some new tires and more seat time will net me a second or two. Maybe by the time I get my Comp License towards to beginning of next year I'll be competitive with the guys up front.

Oh, and here's the clip. We were up at VIR a few weekends ago and there was some fairly interesting equipment in my run group.

A lot of the steering kickback is due to the difference in scrub radius... The wider the track, the worse it will drive and react to changes in the road... on the flip side, a bit more direct and turn-in is sharper. Admittedly yes, changing to a rack style steering system will get rid of the 'looseness' in terms of steering feel (the more you turn, the more the steering feels like it has a 'dead' spot, therefore more sawing at the wheel to achieve desired steering angle) but getting ackerman angles and related geometry spot on with a rack conversion is tricky (IMO).

Sure thing man, shoot me an email anytime! I don't have notifications for PM, so email is a faster way to get in contact. Cheers!

Thanks, yes I did the cluster... although I think trying to use the original RPM gauge was a bit of a bad idea. I should have just gone for a proper electronic VDO gauge since the original '02 gauge doesn't communicate with the signal from the Motronic. It is all hindsight I guess!

I think there are pics of it in the build thread that I linked a few posts above, but I don't have any on this computer at the moment... sorry! More less, its just a regular gauge cluster, hacked up, a sheet of plastic glued on top to align the gauges, and they hold in with a new metal plate at the back of the cluster.
