A freind of mine just bought an longblock from Ford Racing, last summer, supposed to be a 396 with 500 hp. Turned out none of the walves (none of them) closed as they scould. 4 of the exhaust valves never came close, we saw light btween the head ..
Think some 30 yrs older crap is better?

Used unless you're pro, or have lots of cash to burn(literally). Best thing is to go to tire shops and such, and see if you can take some of your size from the soon-to-be recyled pile.

So you're taking one instance, and making a complete generalization? Also, did I not already say he'd be better off with a newer engine?

If uve got a good source for take offs like i do u dont have to buy new but i know for our local track ur going to go thru about 1-1/2 new sets an open drift and more if its a longer track. That gets real expensive real fast.

The front needs to be a quality sticky tire for the track. I suggest getting a seperate wheel set and tires for daily duty and track duties.

Also a terribly assembled crate engine has nothing to do with any other engine new or old.

I'm definitely going to hit up the local tire shops for throw aways. Are they usually pretty cool about it? And whats a good wheel size for drifting will bottle caps work?

If you dont have power bottle caps will work but i think youll prob want a 15 or 16. I run 17s because i have the Power to require a 215 or 225 wide and there more plentiful/less expensive in 17s.

Used tire shops will be a good place to get decent priced tires but arent going to give take offs away because they wont make money. Ive got a buddy who owns a shop so i get new at cost and he gives me take offs because it costs him to get rid of them.

Les swab and dealerships have a tendancy to talk Dummys into swapping all 4 if they have 1 bad one so i have a buddy who will grab good sets when he digs in the les swab trailer by his house and anouther friend that is a service writer at a local dealership so i can go thru there stuff too.

So it cost money for the tire shops to get rid of tires that's a plus will be easier to get. I should be good on bottle caps its only a eta as of right now. I'll look for some better drift spares any wheel recomendations and tires for the front?

build the 302 up and drop it in a 240sx preferably s13. unless you are just doing like street/ kart track drifting then the e30 is fine.

My opinion with drifting, you don't need a big motor to control it. I recommend sticking with a smaller motor, get used to the car and how it wants to handle then as you progress go with something bigger. A lot of these guys I watch now do big motors, and don't know how to control it. The guys running AE86s with stock motors are killing these guys with 240s putting down 3x that power.
I got a fender roller now! LMK if you need me to roll your fenders or want to rent the tool from me locally.

Sounds like initial d lol. But I'd rather be the underdog with a smaller motor that can drive then a big add motor to compensate for my shitty skills.

Coming from mustangs, I would rather have a motor with a shit ton of torque and little horsepower than very little torque and alot of horsepower. You can feel the difference and with drifting torque is gonna play a key factor in getting that car sideways.

Saying that a bigger engine is compensation is crap. You can learn to drive with ls power just as well as u can with an sr. U just look alot more rad with real smoke.

For me right now it would be I'd rather learn on something smaller and then have a bigger engine.

Witch means you dont get torque on a turboed engine?
Thats strange, i know several people thats close to 1000nm with turboed straigh six..

One example that its possible to drift an E30 with inline six
Yet another video from Gatebil on Rudskogen 2011. This is from Lars Kvissel's BMW E30 with S54 B32 M3 Engine. This car got the engine this year so there is…

no one said it wasnt possible but a stock m20 is a far cry from a turboed m20. buy the time you build your turbo setup and tuned it. you would be spending the same if not more then you would to get the 302 up and running, it would likely be less reliable, and you wouldnt have the torque til later.

do i think its bad to learn with small power. no. my point was that it takes alot to drive an car with power. you cant say that if you take a guy who couldnt drive a 120-159 hp car and give him 300 and expect him to drive it any better because it has more power. hes gonna stuff it just like he did the low power car.
