    autocross wheels

My plan at the moment is 9.5 inch M parallel rims with 285/30R18 Hoosier A6 tires. I will probably have to recontour the front fenders to give a couple inches of extra clearance on front and rear edges of the wheel well. The bumper will also have to be relocated forward.

This is on an 89 325is with an OBDI converted S52.

Anybody have any experiences with this type of setup that they could report?

Looks like Alex S. (username alex) ran 18x10.5 with the same tire size. Here's what he did with the fenders:

Here is another option I am considering:

This is a rim from a 2000 corvette. It's made of magnesium and is very light. Somebody told me these rims were a 3000 dollar option new.

What's the wheel specs on those? Looks like a pretty high offset.

I have to run 1.5 inch adapters.

I like option 1. Have you thought about Eurostop flares?

Did you get your wheels sorted out? What diameter are those wheels? I'd think for autocross that you'd maybe want something a little smaller in diameter for some quicker acceleration. Then again, I'm not familiar with what an S52 engine is at the moment. Haven't had time to research it yet.
If I were using wheels for autocross, I'd be looking for something around a 15 or 16 that's about 9.5 or so wide depending on what class you'll be racing in. Are you going to race in SM?

I'm running 275/15s on my other car at the moment. But the rims are 4 lug, so I can't use them on this car. I have the adapters now, and the corvette rims fit fairly nicely. I will probably start out by running 295/17s all the way around, and then switch to 315/18s on the rear if necessary. These are standard tires for C5 Z06s and I have two sets of them already.

I just picked up a 2.79 LSD differential at a pick n pull in Vegas, and will try that first, but my final gearing will probably be 3.25 with a OSGiken differential. I have already bought the Giken diferential, and will pick it up tomorrow at SEMA.

What are you building the car for? Without some serious inner fender work, fitting anything more than 285s at the front of an E30 will be nearly impossible if you want to retain any kind of turning radius. 315s at the rear will be tough as well (no loss, they're too tall IMO).

I use the car for autocross only. I'm running 275s now without any problems. I don't think that 295s will be much worse in the front. I'm prepared to make any fender modifications necessary. I may use the Eurostop fenders. I have a set, but I would probably have to enlarge them as well.

Trust me, i can appreciate the big tire thing...I've got a set of 315s in the garage! Do not underestimate the world of difference between those small diameter 275s and 285+ 18". I've used both. Having said that, 285s do work well and wear much better than the 275s.

What class do you run in?
