    S50 E30 Cabrio Autocross Videos

Some autocross videos from last weekend.

Instructor driven ride along laps. Tried not to beat up the car too much.

This shows the progression of the 5 ride along laps I did from cold tires, etc. until the car was getting a little hot on the last lap. The 5th lap was the fastest of the 5 at a 93.3 ish (can't remember exactly). I didn't stay for the official timed runs at the end of the day.

Here are the final times http://www.sdbmwcca.com/autocross/re...2013-03-02.php

What trans/diff combo are you using? Granted, I'm relatively new to the sport and haven't run a 90+ second autox before, but you were in 3rd a lot and having to shift quite frequently. With a g260/3.73 or zf320/3.23(or 3.15) you don't hit 3rd until about 60, and most events don't let the speeds get much above that. If you're running a 4.10 I would hypothesize you could do better with some longer gearing.

That's my club racing helmet which I started using for autocross this year.

My car has full interior and a roll bar. Its probably the heaviest you can make an E30 unless I run with the hardtop on which I have before.

Here is a link with more info on my build.

                http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=107147

                I have a G260 and a 3.73 LSD.

The parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium is very large. It could accomdate a 1.5 mile track but we typically design 1.1 mile tracks due to the timing equipment limitations.

I've gotten up to 80 mph at these autocrosses depending on the layout. Imagine what the E92 M3 get up to.

The rest comes down to strategy. Do you want to up shift and down shift contatntly to ring out as much power as possible or try to get the speed up and keep that speed. I tried a mixture and these laps show the results. I didn't want to keep bouncing off the rev limiter in 2nd so I tried to stay in 3rd and save the car.

What's interesting is that I had a Miata driver with me on lap 1 and 2. A 335 driver with me on lap 3. Another instructor who races a Lemons E30 on the 4th lap and the GT3 driver with me on the last lap (lap 5). That GT3 was a beautiful car.

SCCA or BMWCCA? I have a S50 swapped vert that will done soon and was curious what was required to run, ie: roll bar.

It's setup for BMWCCA autocross. I believe BMWCCA rules might vary slightly by chapter but I'm not 100% sure. If I stayed for the timed runs I would have been classed in Gold since I'm an instructor. If I were just a participant my car would be classed as M Modified due to the S50 swap and the modifications to both the engine and the chassis.

No requirement for a roll bar to autocross. I just added one to be safe.

No special rules to run in BMWCCA. They class cars based on stock or modified, etc. Check the time sheet link in the first post of this thread for the classes they use.

You can run a car you just drove off the showroom floor all the way to a club race car that you tow in on a trailer.

Oh yeah, I remember your car now. And wow, 80mph in an autox is fast! That explains the need for 3rd for sure. With those speeds I agree with your strategy, the car has enough torque that unless you're in too tight of a section you can get away with still being in 3rd.
