I have an e36 318ti small case lsd in my track car now. I will let you know how it goes although I have a worked m42 in front of it. I had lots of trouble finding parts because I did not know is was not an e30 diff but I now have a contact to make and supply my clutch plates if I need any more. My ratio is a 4.45:1 too. I also beleive that the USA did not get the e36 318ti

No, the US did get the e36 ti, but if I recall correctly only the 95 318ti sport got a true LSD here, making that particular diff hard to find.

Bummer man, Well we will all be wishing you were there.

Pay the extra couple of hundred bucks for the real thing.
The reason is they are becoming much harder to find in out area. Typically when one pops up one of us E30nuts or club racers grabs it quick. Thus me wanting to explore other options.

Thanks for the real world info though. It only take 30 minutes to swap. I may try and run one for testing sessions only and see how many it can withstand.

And Skifree, thanks for that link!

Thats because GM rearends are horrible! haha. Also i have a small case 4.10 LSD in my 318i and was planning on doing just a m50 m52 swap soon, but im guessing i should swap out for a medium anyway?

Launching on a small case is a bad idea too....And I was on street tires. I had a s3.23 from a 323is. I grenaded the poor thing, then proceeded to install an s3.25 med case from a 5er. Have since fried the clutch packs from too many track days. It acts like an open diff now.

Didn't help that most often it was in one of my '66 Chevy II's - the monoleaf rear suspension had really bad wrap up on launch, causing the rear axle to hop all over the damn place..

I have a small case package for someone pushing the limits of normal small case strength.

I'd be willing to sell/trade for interesting racing parts please pm if serious. I race a e30 24v.

This was designed for the endurance car I race but then we changed up the gearbox and ended up racing on the existing rear end.

Fully cryogenically frozen as a set: avail with case assembled or in pieces to diy

2x 4.45 168mm gearsets -cryogenically treated. Very nice: come as a set. One to run and one spare: the cryogenic process takes a while to line up.

1x 168mm lsd unit hot tanked and completly cryogenically frozen including internal gears/parts- standard cases and top caps are very brittle and flexy and can shear at top cap bearing load surface when ran hard with slicks.

2x pieces of proprietary metal matrix wangan spex (oem is organic) clutch discs- the small case has limited capacity for more discs and organic materials overheat quickly.

                2x new steels (proprietary spec)
1x case is available as well- bead blasted with new bearing races assembled inside

This 325i is running a small case S4.10. If they don't break from all those clutch kicks, I don't see why they would under normal street/racing conditions. Don't do any crazy clutch dumps and it should be alright.

Almost relevant- I raced a 2002 in E Production for 8 years on small cases. Finally used
up one 4.10 after about 6... but it came to me with the car, already well- used.
Why is this relevant? The motor makes 165 hp and 145 ft-lbs...

                    Irrelevancy? Only weighs 2200, so that's a #450 difference. And I used
late 320 cases, which have the big pinion nose bearing (the E30 went back to small)

Having said that, mine were all welded, so a lot less heat. Legal in Pro3, now.
As are coolers, which might prove to be necessary. Weren't, in the '02

Lots of nice ratios- 3.91, 4.10, 4.27, 4.44, and the donor gears are usually pretty
                    inexpensive.

                    t
now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

We ran a 225K mile 4.45 lsd behind a strong M52 for our lemons race and it worked great. Honestly I'm not sure how long it would last with out some maintenance though.
