almost sig worthy, very awkward post, it's like you were suprised! He's an old friend you knew 8 years ago, and then saying "You still live at your moms?!"
In all seriousness, after being on forums the past 10 years, it really seems that the Northwest crowd tends to be the lurking type. I'm guilty as well.
I really want to rally cross, My project car isn't really prepped for anything like this, but I have a e34 535i I wouldn't mind tossing around!! LOL

nah, I didn't know he was on here at all. He's on our e30 rallycross facebook page and he posted the tire pics there so I knew it was him :)
also, you don't need to "prep" your car in any significant way. We've had stock Camrys, Acura TLs, and a ton of other cars rallycrossing this season that you'd never picture out there.
You only need to prep if you plan to truly drive it at the limits.
e34 is a big car but shouldn't have any real problems other than being slow and getting the underside really dirty. We have an e28 in our group that's been running all season (granted, slightly smaller car than yours).
feel free to join up on our page and discuss whatever...
Originally group for rallycross, rally, and other budget motorsports in old BMWs in the Washington, D.C. area, specifically the e30 chassis BMW. Also open to other e30 and rally friends from around...
Hi guys I'm nowhere near here but was wondering if there was some discussion board about rally setups for e30 guys. I'm really trying to figure out if I should stop my M50 swap and just go M20 for this particular application. Also what sort of suspension mods should I look at doing?
UNDER CONSTRUCTION - 24v 325e (future DD), DD 525i
stripped out e30 rally project - in progress
M50NV -> M50TU E34 swap underway
I would rather have the M20 for RallyX. Too much RWD power in the dirt with the M50. Tough enough getting the power to the ground already. Nothing special about the suspension setup that I use. I autoX my car, swap tires, and run in the dirt.
Oh, so a turbo M20 would be useless?
Also suspension looks lowered but I was just planning on getting some stiffer springs and HD billys. I wanted the springs to be only slightly lower than stock, should I be looking at coilovers?

I don't think a turbo, or M50 will do any good in the dirt. Power is not a problem, traction is. My 2.7i will spin the tires in 3rd gear at over 60mph.
H&R sport springs, and HD Billys are what I use. Don't want it too stiff, you need the weight transfer to steer. Coilovers for RallyX would be overkill, IMO.
Pretty sure irish44j and his friends all run M42's. You don't notice the buzziness because you are running at high revs all the time anyway.
I wanted a car that was something I would like to drive around town, so went with an M20.
I also have a track car with a 3.0L stroker M20 and a vert with an OBD-I M52. I would love to have an M50 in the rallycross car. :nice:
If you have not started the swap and the car runs with the M20, then don't start the swap yet, just drive/race it for a while, enjoy it and see how it feels.
For suspension, seems to be pretty varied. I wanted as much ground clearance as possible because I also do volunteering for stage rally. So, I have new Bilstein HD shocks on stock 325i springs. Really looks tall.
Having rallycrossed in a friend's Subaru with track suspension, I do not recommend anything hard. So, some mild sport and/or lowering springs should be fine.
I recommend adding a skid plate as soon as possible. I ordered a SumpArmor plate from Red46 without the oil drain hole. You have to remove it to change the oil, but solid under tray/skid plates are the norm for rally applications.
At this time, the WA Rallycross series called "Got Dirt?" is done for. Thurston County found out the land owner was charging money and will now require a Special Use Permit and inspections which cost thousands of dollars and may not be granted in the end.
What cjm said. We have a couple guys that run a beat-o 528e with automatic, and it does pretty good. They have excellent weight transfer with massive body roll, but turn good times.
