Are there any rules requiring 15x10's, or is the main reason the ability to fit 275/35's? Aka, would it be horrible to get a 15x9.5 et0 instead? It would save the trouble of having to buy spacers, would be slightly lighter and could fit with a smaller flare.

No, it's mainly to get the most out of the tire. In reality, a 15x11 would be even better for the 275/35.
Many guys in the Miata world are running 205/50 Hoosier R6 on 15x9s because it's proved to be faster to keep going wider on the wheels.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

^ correct, there are several 15x9's out there although not dedicated lightweight e30 race wheels.
There is nothing out there to run a 275/35. also during the feeler, the interest was mainly on the 15x10 nobody really expressed an interest in purchasing a 15x9.
the 15x9 would be a great option for people looking to run 225/45/15 street tires in STX or something not quite as aggressive in SM/DSP locally. but the 275/35 is where its at to be really fast in an e30
The miata guys have been proving for quite some time that the widest wheel/smallest tire tends to be the fast way around the track and If I'm not mistaken a new article in GRM also said the same thing.-Brad

Your best options for running R-comps on a 10" wide wheel are either 15s or 17s - much better tire selection with newer compounds.

Exciting update! Jongbloed will also make this wheel in a 5x120 pattern for those of you interested in running these on a 5 lug swapped car.
Also see the first post for an updated rendering of what the 15x10 wheel is expected to look like!
I'm planning to send out payment instructions by the end of this week as we've got almost 15 people interested between the 4x100 and 5x120
Its looking like payment will go as follows: 50% up front to Jongbloed, and then once the wheels arrive to them they will expect the other 50% payment before sending out the wheels.-Brad

Sweet.
FYI, the above pic was my old setup. There was very little metal cut out--just the lower front valence trimmed a tiny bit. The rest was done with a very aggressive fender rolling, but it did fit. I was limited in how much I could lower the rear, so I changed it and added DTM Fiberworks flares that I cut for clearance. It is much easier to fit on an early car as the rear arches are higher.
