I would love to have a synchro. I use my 73 westy for camping/kayaking & other outdoor stuff and the thing is actually pretty unstoppable, good ground clearance just need better mudding tires & 46 hp isn't quite enough lol..

A 2 1/2 ton, 4 wheel drive ~110 hp Vanagon isn't exactly bursting at the seams with power either...

Toss on a 5 speed manual box with a clutch that I think was made out of paper, and you have the vehicle I learned how to drive on.

85 vanagon syncro, neat vehicle, but man, it didn't move. It would do 65, in about a minute or so in a straight line. 70 if you had enough road, 55 if you had a headwind.

Sadly enough, if I could find another vanagon that wasn't rusted to shit or had the head gaskets blown apart, I'd pick it up for the hell of it.

Only thing bad about the vanagons (most of them) are the watercooled engines have a habit of bursting into flames, I watched my firends burn to a crisp on the side of the highway. My westie will do 70, but damn, if a semi rolls by i'm in trouble lol..
I learned to drive manual on my westie too ,just finding the gears was an adventure.

Heh. Ours is a gold 85 syncro, and was the car that my dad used to teach me to use a manual transmission. The syncro is starting to rust pretty badly, due to the fact that all our winter driving gets done in it. The 89 carat isn't as bad, but the engine is pretty tired at 230k, and makes this nice sticky sweet smell. Wonder what that could be...

No kidding. The thing is, you don't fully realize how slow they actually are until you're riding in one with someone else driving. When you're driving you're too busy rowing that yardstick of a shift lever, trying to find the next gear :D
