*Revived and updated* Enclosed trailer / camper idea - thoughts?

a storage/bath/kitchen/bedroom would work nicely if this was just me and a lady friend... i wouldn't need walls, just privacy curtains... or maybe some chains and soundproof walls



however

to help offset fuel costs, i'm gonna try to find someone local who'll pitch in for gas in exchange for a tow to the drift event we're both going to. trying to minimize the amount of foot traffic through the bedroom for privacy reasons, also i'm a very light sleeper.

forgot to draw dimensions on the picture - the storage room is 5'x7.5'

i know things are gonna get tight quick, but the main difference between my skoolie and the ones most other people make (at least that i've seen anyway) is that i'm only really putting emphasis on a single main occupant with a second supplemental occupant instead of planning for four occupants. i'm tossing around the idea of a roof deck, since most track days are in the summer (as well as most vacation days) i could have extra people bring a tent or some shit and sleep on the roof deck

I'd redesign it a bit. Get all your plumbing as close together as possible. Will make the build and cost lower. Maybe do it storage/bath/kitchen/bedroom. also full walls will be needed in some areas but if it's just you I'd incorporate some knee walls or partial height. That space is going to get small in a hurry. Knee walls will still give the illusion its big will maintaining some privacy.

Something to think about. If you buy a school bus or uhaul truck and convert it to a hauler, then it's only purpose will be to haul the racecar. It will sit most of the time and as with any vehicle sitting causes problems....especially with large trucks that will most likely have air systems for brakes and suspensions. Then there is insurance on an extra vehicle and the maintenance.

One of the teams we race with has an old moving truck similar to this one

with the doors already in the side. They have one car in the back and then tow a trailer with a second car on it. They unload the car on the trailer and then drop the ramps onto the trailer and drive the second car from the truck onto the trailer and then onto the ground. I thought it was a pretty cool setup but, I talked with the owner and he said he would rather have a normal pickup with trailer because he spends more time maintaining the toy hauler than he does the racecar.

I bought a chevy 2500 and a 24 enclosed trailer. The truck is my daily driver and then we hook to the trailer to go racing. Three of us sleep in ENO hammocks suspended from the roof rafters while the fourth guy sleeps on an army cot below us. No extra insurance, no extra maintenance.... We keep the trailer loaded with all the tools and car so load out is easy and efficient.

Yeah, the drive to summit point, which usually takes me less than 1.2hrs took 2 in the morning. 2.6hrs coming back to Baltimore. Fastest I ever got was 60, most of the time I only had enough power for 55. Alot of hills I couldn't do more than 50 in third, a few I was stuck at 45. On a 65mph highway. The trailer sway was so bad at some points... twas one of the most stressful drives I've ever done.

Only plus was that the ranger got an average of 16mpg which kinda shocked me, cuz I bet the average TPS reading was 70-80% open

Try doing the drive we have now for rallycross (we used to be at Summit)...out to Frostburg. Going up one of the big long uphills even towing my fairly light car and trailer, I was struggling to keep up 40mph by the time I got to the top (with o/d off).

The one nice thing about the heavy sequoia and my ability to take a heavy-ish tongue weight (I estimate I'm around 500lbs loaded, if not a bit more) is that the trailer is rock-solid with no sway at all, ever. The tows are downright boring...

It's an 05. The 4.7 isn't exactly a beast, but it's sufficient to lug the heavy-ass truck around and tow a light-ish car and trailer. And get 10mpg while doing it.

Now, an 08+ with the 5.7L, that would be great to tow with :)

But yeah, I"m sure it's a hell of a lot better than doing it with a Ranger, so I'm not really complaining

Hence why I just got an open-deck that I can hide out of sight behind my fence, and instead of the minivan she wanted, my wife drives a Sequoia that I use to tow ;D
