OK, so lets say you were in my shoes, and were looking for a long-lasting R-comp that is intermediate-friendly, what would you get?

    1) 205/60 R3S04 - $80 each
    2) 225/50 RA-1 - $120 each + shipping

    Keep it slideways!!

Hoosier and Toyo RA1 dont compare at all. One is a DOT Slick no tread very soft and not good for autox at all in anyway. they need to be brought up to temp first your better off getting some basic street tires for autox than R3S04s or any hoosier unless its thier A3S04,5,6

the R3S04 is a track tire designed to be used for racing your wasting your money buying them for auto-x when hot they have alot more grip only surpassed by true slicks.

You want a long lasting r-compound? you bought the wrong tire if you got the R3S04, they arent intermediate they are terrible in wet condition and in autox they will never get up to temp and they will just slide all over teh place and be ruined in a day because they just get torn up when they are repeately abused cold and never get time to heat up and cure. unless you have tire warmers these were a big mistake.

Race tire not a autox or street tire. For Competition use only its not legal on the street. In most states you can get a ticket for them. They will last about 500miles max on the road.

Toyo-RA1 is what i have for autox works fine. its a street tire with a softer compound shaved down. its good for autox because its a street tire and will offer me decent grip even when cold.

If you havent bought the R3S04 yet dont you will regret it and probably go slower because they wont have any grip at all when cold.

That might be good advice if Axxe was looking for an auto-x tire. He is looking for a road course tire.

Exactly. I'm looking for a tire that will last more than one weekend of HPDE's, I have grown out of street tires.

Still pricer than the 04's. I just ordered the RA-1's. Should work out fine :D

Sorry I didn't see this before now- but since you ordered the RA-1's, I think you made a good choice.

The Hoosiers are kinda scary in the wet, but really, really good in the dry- full tread RA-1's are pretty decent in the wet, and really good in the dry. (assuming that by "intermediate" tire, you meant conditions that are sort of wet, but not full-on rain???).

I would say that the RA-1's will probably last 30-50% longer than the Hoosiers, roughly- so financially it's about even, especially when you factor in the extra $$ to change and balance tires. But, most R-compounds tend to have their best grip in the first 1/3 or so of their tread life- not really an issue for DE's, but could make a huge difference in competition.

i wasnt sure there was talk about autox so i got confused. yeah a hooiser is good but not really for DE's a hoosier in my eyes is a race tire. it wont last long but it will be really sticky. at a DE youve got nothing to prove no one cares if you pass everyone and you wont get anything being the fastest one there. Toyos are the best choice for DEs IMO

if ytou have hooisers run them one session and get them nice and hot then take them off the car and let them cure for about 30 days you will extended thier life by 75%

By intermediate I meant an intermediate driver. I'm in no sense a rookie, nor am I a pro. I want tires that offer more grip yet still have a somewhat linear release when overdriven.

Not running slicks, but I will put the 205/60R14 Hoosier R-compound (track tires) I just bought on 14x6" bottlecaps. They should be just fine.

I couldn't resist any longer.. I ordered AS304s in 225/50-14. only a little smaller than my azenis (which are near the end of their life).

You might want to look at getting some small spacers as well Chris, I needed 1/4" to get the extra strut clearance. They are great, so long as there is some heat in them.

I'm not sure if I will need them or not with my struts.. I have some from my parts car though if they are required. I hope not though, because spacers are a royal PITA.
