Suspension design types on different ethusiant cars

with all the hating on e30's ancient design and talking about auto-x recently, been wanting to findout what all ethusiant cars use for suspension setups

    here's a start:

    84-91 E30: Macpherson strut front / Semi-trailing arm rear
92+ E36: Macpherson strut front / Multilink rear
Mini Cooper (BMW): Macpherson strut front / Multilink rear
Evo 8: MacPherson strut front / Multilink rear
years? FC RX-7: Macpherson strut front / Semi-trailing arm rear
(w/ hubs that alter toe?? DTSS?)
93+ FD RX-7: Double wishbone front / Multilink rear
RX-8: Double wishbone front / Multilink rear
993 (- current) Porsches adopted a multi-link rear suspension which was originally developed on the 928
I believe all MkI to MkIV Golfs, Jettas, GTis were macpherson strut front and torsion beam rear. Torsion beam is a semi-independent trailing arm set up.
    I believe all 944s (924, 944, 951, 968 ) were macpherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear.

Hondas before the 2000s: all double-wishbone all around for the most part?
2004 Sentras - All SE-Rs feature front independent MacPherson struts and Nissan’s patented rear Multi-Link Beam™design.
99+ G20 (P11) "The G20's combination of a multi-link front suspension with a multi-link beam beam rear suspension seems like the Harvard-Phd-meets-prison-work-release mismatch of the century" http://www.se-r.net/about/g20/scc/oct98/tb.html

Miata: General: Front engined - Rear wheel drive, Double overhead Cam, All round independent wishbone suspension, weight generally less than or around 1000Kg, power is 116-140 bhp, 0-100Kph in 7.9 - 8.6 Secs. Disc brakes all round.

    ....

admitting that suspension technology has passed E30s is not hating fwiw, but I digress...

I'd like to see specifics on the MKII and MKIII vee-dubs, as well as other e30 competition (NA 944, older MR2, Celicas, etc)

      a lot of old 911s were semi-trailing arm-ed? right?

what are they running on 993s?

i can slowly search and find more during work. but maybe someone will take it upon themselves or know of more data already

all the air cooled cars are the same AFAIK, except the 964 (1991ish+?) started using coiled springs instead of torsion bars. Same basic design though.

I have no clue what the new pooshies are doing to fight improper balance, but they seem to be doing it well

993 (- current) Porsches adopted a multi-link rear suspension which was originally developed on the 928, called the weissach axle (IIRC). It basically allows for more incompetent driver to lift mid corner without worry

I'm amazed so many sports cars are still using a MacPherson front end. Guess it doesn't matter once you get a decent set of plates in and dial in the camber

Are Miatas really double wishbone front and rear?

Everything about the car had a delightfully light touch. Instead of smothering the pavement under huge rubber, it relied on careful tuning of the double wishbone (front and rear) suspension to get the most out of modest P185/60HR14 tires. Power steering was an option, but the standard manual rack-and-pinion setup reacted instinctively to steering inputs and reported back even subtle details about what was going on with the tires. The four-wheel disc brakes weren't very big, but they didn't need to be on this car.

Yes, all hondas up to the 2000s or so had double wishbone all around. I believe all MkI to MkIV Golfs, Jettas, GTis were macpherson strut front and torsion beam rear. Torsion beam is a semi-independent trailing arm set up.

I think the e30 suspension works great, plenty for us street users. My e30 has a fully independent suspension while my 11 year newer VW has a semi-independent rear suspension. Even the VW macpherson strut design pales in comparison to the elegant e30 design.

there are those who bash e30 suspensions (bimmerforums e36+ guys), but as shown in several ways, it can be made to work or driven regardless of

oh well, better to learn on the harder to handle suspension than the easy-to-go-fast more advanced one. and it works well enough for the street.

2006 GTI (and I assume other of that family) have multilink independent suspensions now, finally. lawlz.

2002 Honda Civic Si ... There are a MacPherson strut front suspension and a double-wishbone rear suspension
The 1988 CRX debuted alongside the fourth-generation Civic and was therefore among the first cars to use Honda's ingenious new four-wheel, double-wishbone suspension system.
All Focus models are front-wheel drive cars with a fully-independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and a multilink design Ford calls ``Control Blade'' in the rear.

Introduced in 1979 as a model of the Celica, the Supra has been related to the critically acclaimed 2000GT sports car, whose 2.6 liter straight-six engine it used; at first it had a solid-axle rear suspension, and the twelve-valve engine only produced 110 hp, with fuel injection. The Supra was longer than the Celica liftback by a good five inches. Four wheel disc brakes were standard, as was a five-speed manual transmission; a four-speed automatic, unusual in those three-speed times, was optional. The MacPherson strut suspension included a sway bar, and the rear suspension had a stabilizer and sway bar.

The second generation began in 1982, with the engine given twin overhead cams to bump horsepower to 145 hp (it bumped to 150 in 1983, 160 in 1984, and 161 by 1986), as well as an independent rear suspension to keep all four tires on even bumpy roads.

The 1982 Celicas kept the 2.4 liter (144 cubic inch) engine that pushed out 96 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor or a rather better 105 horsepower with electronic fuel injection (that would eventually rise to 116 hp by 1985); Australian models used a lower power 21C engine.

While the Supra was now a model of its own, rather than a Celica model, the Celica GT-S used the Supra’s independent rear suspension

2000+ Celicas: Independent MacPherson strut front suspension / Rear suspension Double wishbone

The 1998 240SX is relatively unchanged from its predecessor and Nissan will continue to offer three trim levels: Base, SE and LE. All 240SX models are equipped with a four wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a front stabilizer bar. The rear suspension includes a multi-link design with coil springs. (same with 91 era s13s as well)

MKII MR2 - macpherson strut F/R.. same as Boxster?

Subaru new STI - inverted struts F/R???!?

The 2002 WRX’s suspension system has been revised for greater stability, response, and reduced noise and vibration. The front suspension is derived from a MacPherson strut design that features L-shaped lower control arms that attach to the chassis through vibration damping liquid-filled bushings. The improved geometry of the WRX and RS models (which arrive on U.S. shores with a 20mm wider track) provide added stability while quickening steering response. The WRX sedans push the strut position and wheel hub assemblies outward 10 mm to reduce ground contact angles and reduce body roll. The dual link rear strut suspension uses a trailing link and two vertical links per side in conjunction with a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension crossmember is lighter and stronger than those on the previous generation Imprezas.
