So I'm brand new to the whole E30 scene but I wanted to get into some track/autox and maybe SE30. I've got an 89 sedan with a little bit of cosmetic rust, nothing more than 2 inches in diameter. Frame rails are straight and not rusty at all. I was just wondering how strict are they on rust during tech inspections?

^^^This.
A race car is a tool, like a shovel.
If it really bothers you, find someone with a cheap wire feed, grab some scrap sheetmetal, weld it up and lay a thick coat of self etching primer and maybe some paint.1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

If tech was worried about that sh*t, 95% of the chump cars (and good section of SCCA/NASA) would never make the track.
Now, if the floor looks like swiss cheese where the seat mounts, yes, they will probably have some words and might not let you out there.
The order of importance:
-driver competence
-driver safety
-other drivers safety
-turn workers safety
-fire risk
-what you had for dinner the night before
-numbers/class readable
-what your ideal mate looks like
....
...
....
....
-how your car looks.

Race long enough, the rust gets worn off.
True of the driver, too... eventually....
DO look carefully, though, because SOME rust always means SOME MORE rust in other
places, and if you've already found most of it, tech will be easier on you.
Like the rusted- away Y- pipe under the rusted- away cover plate
up under your right rear wheel that lets you dump fuel out there when you have
a full tank....
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

The outside looks like hell but the cage is solid and the frame is healthy. Cosmetic doesn't really mean anything. I feel less bad when I hit stuff too
