I specifically shift at 6,000 RPM for 2 reasons.
One, the torque/power curve falls off at 6k, so there is no reason to go any higher.
Second, I am worried about breaking rocker arms, so to save wear and tear on the engine and the rockers which are the weak link, I shift at 6k max.
I've only broken one rocker arm in the 7 years of racing an E30. (knock on wood). I credit this to keeping the RPMs below redline.
Also, I hold the race lap record at my local track. So it is not like I'm giving up laps times by shifting at 6k. :-)
