    Wheel and tire question

I bought some wheels off tire rack. They are E30 spec 15x8. I'm thinking of wrapping them with Hankook rs3 245/45/15. Is anyone running that on their car? If so, did you have to roll the fenders?

I don't know the answer, though I believe the offset of the wheels will be necessary for someone to do so.

Is your car lowered? I had to do a little fender rolling with 225/45/15 BFG Rivals on wheels with those same specs. I'm on H&R Race and Bilstein Sports.

I have 15x8 +20 on billy sport/ie3 with 225 45 15 bfg rivals. My fenders are not rolled and everything clears. Make sure you ask for stick on weights, or else the weight will hit the front strut.

225 or 245? I just looked and only see 225's offered. 225 should be fine. You may* have some rubbing but a roll would fix it.

Thank you bud. I will have to confirm with the shop that they are selling me 245. But thank you for the knowledge.

245 is a tough fit for a 15x8 and will feel shitty on turn in. 225 rs3 has an 8inch tread width.

Okay cool! Thank you for the heads up.

I want the car for the track, so you are saying 225 is the way to go?

                      Absolutely!

Some will even have you go with a wide 205. Always check the manufacturers specs. the section width is mm's is a very loose number. You want to match the Section Width more so than the tread width.

As an example. Star Spec II's in 205/50/15 have an 8.4in section width compared the 225/45/15 RS3's 8.5 :)

225m = 8.8 inches but the specs show a section width of 8.5in and tread width of 8in for the RS-3

This is a new language to me lol. I'm going to have to do some research. But I'll go with the 225/45/15

Also worth noting, compound > width.

You were originally looking at a 245/45/15 rs3 but Hankook doesn't make a tire that size so I'm wondering if you meant the 245 wide Maxxis tire that recently came out?

out of the current crop of 200tw street tires the Maxxis is towards the slower end of the spectrum. the Hankook is a bit of an older tire and also a bit slower too. however what the slower tires give up in speed they make up for in wear, you'll get far longer life out of those vs the much faster Bridgestone RE-71 and BFG Rival S.

Since you've already been talked down to 225/205 I'll ignore the 245's. generally speaking street tires prefer to be square on the wheel or even have the slightest bit of stretch. You won't gain much if any time with a 225 vs a 205 on a 8" wheel, but you will lose steering feedback pinching the wider tire on a narrower wheel which ultimately could lead to slower lap times as some drivers don't do well with vague setups.

in closing, I usually categorize 200tw street tires in 2 groups:

Group 1 (the every second counts I want to win time attack/autox):
                            Bridgestone RE-71R
                            BFG Rival-S

Group 2 (I want something stickier than avg but I'm not too worried about laptimes)
This is where everything else falls.
The Maxxis and Hankook options are the best long life/high grip tires IMO.
The Dunlop star spec and Falken rt615k are a bit faster but still wear better and net slower lap times than the group 1 tires

Sorry I wasn't able to help with the question about rolling but since you were off to research tires anyways figured I'd add some fuel to the fire!

Thank you for the info. At the moment because my car is not 100% track I don't want something too sticky that will wear out quick. I want a tire that I can take to the track and cruse around on the weekends.

You are correct! Correction 225/45/15 on the hankook tire.

                              Thank you so much.
