You might even get stuck up a steep hill with an iX. Awd doesnt mean you can get through anything. Rwd with snow tires should be good for just about anything.

that's not very likely.. I came to a dead stop on a very steep incline that was covered in a sheet of ice (a train track crossing). this was seriously a 30-40 degree incline. once the train passed I took off like on any other surface - the back end came out a bit, but otherwise no big deal.
seriously, don't even try to claim that a 325i can match the ix in the snow! I want to see you guys drive for 2 weeks on ice and compacted snow with Yoko ES100s. :D
I never said the rwd e30 will match the iX in snow. All I am saying is that for a LOT of situations a rwd with snow tires ALL AROUND (not just in back) will work out very well and if you know what you are doing you will prolly not get stuck.

probably.. but then you can't have fun driving a BMW where you really shouldn't, passing snowplows and big giant 4x4 trucks :D
seriously, it's like BMW made a snowmobile, only you can go much faster.. just for fun one year, I tried to see how fast I could go on the freeway which was covered in ice and snow (this is early in the morning, almost no traffic, the freeway is in the middle of a big field and it's completely flat/straight). I hit 85 before I noticed a cop sitting in a speed trap, I slammed on my brakes down to the speed limit (70) and kept going. the few cars that were out on the road were doing about 35.. it was a bit bumpy, but not really scary at all.
you probalby would have been pulled over in california. there is a "prima facie" speed law. meaning driving over whatever speed is "safe" is illegal. with snow on the road like that anything over 45 would probably be "unsafe".
