    Helmet recommendations?

I'm signing up for the high performance driving school held at NHIS by the BMW club. I need a helmet and wanted to know where I should get one, and what kind I should get. All suggestions are appreciated!!

    Here are the requirements:
    Must wear a Snell 2000 or newer helmet. This certification (M00, SA00, M2000, SA2000, M05, SA05, M2005, SA2005) must be visible.

        TRY THEM ON.
Go to a motorcycle shop in your area and wear them.
If it were an autocross helmet (short periods of time wearing it) and you had time I'd say buy a great deal on ebay etc and then gamble on fit, but if you are doing track days (long time in the helmet) then you need to know it fits perfectly and does not have any pressure points.

GForce and Pyrotect are "good value for the money" brands. HJC makes an awesome helmet that isn't a lot more expensive than those, but for a beginner the lower end helmets will be fine. If you get addicted to this sport (a distinct possibility) and do very many track events you'll probably wind up replacing your helmet about every other year (they get stinky and the linings wear). So buying a great helmet up front isn't necessary.

It is best to get an SA 2005 rated helmet. The M rated (motorcycle) helmets are not as good in impact or fire resistance. And NOMAD's advice about trying on helmets is excellent. You wind up wearing a helmet for 20-30 minutes at a time during DE's, so you want something that's comfortable for extended wear. But satisfying this desire can be problem if there aren't any race supply shops near by. Most on-line sellers are aware of this and will allow a helmet to be exchanged if there's a fitment problem, but if you buy on-line verify that up-front.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Just a follow up for the thread I posted, I ended up picking up the base model Pyrotect full face SA2005 helmet. It was fairly cheap ($200-$250). Fits well, no unusual issues. I found a local speed shop to try it on. Try finding your local SCCA region and ask around for local speed shops. I had one less then an hour away from me that I never knew of, and I thought I knew of all of the automotive shops in my entire state!

I have to say i have the Bell BR-1 and i love it, luckily i have a local shop (www.Solotime.com) that sells them so i got to try it on befor i bought it.

I think it is a great helmet for HPDEs because it is light, white(black can get hot), and overall a good value.

As many people say TRY THEM ON!! they are like seats, every person is different. Also if that is not possible go to their sizing charts and measure your head.

I'm planning on going with the HJC HX-10. I'm a fan of HJC's fit, so the hardest part is desiging how I want it painted...

I got a chance to try on a few helmets (i think I'm a large). For now I'm just taking a few classes until next spring so I wont be on the track toooo much. So I think I'll just go with the Force 1 Helmet because it meets the requirements of the track and its cheap. Maybe if I get "addicted" Ill spend the extra dollar next spring and get me a sweeaat ass helmet and maybe even a 6 point harness!!

I just got my Force One a couple of weeks ago, $150 shipped from saferacer.com

Comfy, I was hesitant to get an XL but it fits snug while not giving me a headache. Sooooooo much better than the loaner helmets.

noooo... no harness if you don't have at least a 4 point roll bar.
