Dual purpose trailer, the car goes on it along with any crap I need to haul around the house.
Thing works great, and has dual brakes. Tow vehicle is a 2000 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7 V-8, 3.92 with limited slip, and 5 speed stick. It's going to go up for sale sometime soon and hopefully be replaced with a Seqouia.
"U-Haul trucks - $40 per day; U-Haul trailers - $20 per day; U-Haul towing devices - $20 per day."
If you rent a truck and a trailer, even if it costs $100 per day with insurances, it will still be cheaper than buying a truck and trailer... And foremost, you won't have to park the truck and trailer during the week, or insure and maintain them over the year.

I think if you do in-town rentals (bring it back to the same place you rent) they charge you mileage.
Honestly, I'd rather buy a used tow rig than rent a POS from U-haul. They have HORRIBLE maintainance. You'd have a better chance of that POS breaking down on the way to/from the track then your own car breaking at the track.
--- My E30 is not licensed or insured so i have to trailer it everywhere (HPDE/Autocross) events.. its such a relief to know that at the end of the day.. i can just get it on the trailer and pull it home --
i rent a car hauler from the gas station down the street @ $49.95 plus tax per day. My first rig was a '96 F150 was decent enough but would not cross 70 mph and gave me around 12-14 mpg --so trips to & from events would be very long and drawn out .. for that reason i've limited my self to 3 hour max one way --
I recently missed a HPDE because of an electrical gremlin on the Ford..and so i got new '07 Tundra.. lol-- wewt !! talk about effortess.. -- i have already seen a reduction in time to events and improved gas mileage. its also has enough space to overnight in the cab if necessary --so for the new year i expect my range to extended ..

My tow rig and daily, 04 3/4 ton exe cab short box GMC w/ a Duramax/Allison and 4wd. No pics of it but a open deck tandem axle 19/ft with the dove tail, car hauler, has ele. brakes on the front axle
I used to drag shit around behind a 04 Colorado 4x4 w/the 5cyl. It didnt like it but it did it with out too many issues. Also used to have a 93 454 chevy 3/4 ton gas sucking pig.

The GMC Sierra is my Diesel, If you want a diesel, the duramax is the ticket though
There is a Diesel option for a Colorado but not in North America. Just a 3.5l in line 5, now the new ones are bumped to 3.7l. It was an all right mini truck but I just need a full size an finaly broke down a bought the 1 I should have bought when I got the Colorado.
As far as the dodges go old or new the cummings is a very close second to the Max in my mind. The old ones are noisy as hell (sound like a ready mix cement truck) but the new ones are as quite as the Max if not more so. But always get a 5 spd as dodge still has not figured out how to get a good auto behind the diesel. They also have a tendency to burn up lift pumps, it will still run along time but it will wipe out the injection pump over time. The old 12 valve can be hot roded to the hilt, The 24 valve can as well but I cant remember why the 12 valve it the hod rod engine of choice.

Yeah I know about the lift pump issues. Would prefer an automatic but yeah they don't deal with the torque issues. I don't have the budget for a newer GMC, mine was in the under 10K range.

you should be able to find a decent dodge cummings for that. will have 175k + miles though, but for a 6bt thats just getting broken in.
At 175k, the problem isn't the engine but the rest of the truck. My '98 Dodge was falling apart at 150k. Not to mention the third transmission was starting to make some noise.

I've had a motor blow on a rental. It only had 65k on it, if the odometer was to be believed, but it sounded like crap when I picked it up. Fortunately it was empty, so I just returned to the rental place on the back of the wrecker and had them pay. Still, sitting on the side of the highway waiting for a big tow truck to show up sucked, and then it took him awhile to get the driveshaft disconnected.
i wish i had a tow vehicle. last time i was out at the track my brakes went out going around a sharp turn drifting the track with a gt2 behind me lol. tow home was 35 bucks with AAA it really sucks :(

35 bux multiplied by the amount of times you're at the track in a year is still probably less than any reliable tow vehicle. I say you got a deal on that tow.

For sure or the maintenance of your tow vehicle. I have a 2005 F250 superduty and the oil change(16qts) and fuel filter service last week was just shy of $300.00. Oil change's are every 5000 miles($115.00) and fuel filters are every 15000 miles($170.00). Not to mention the fuel cost which this truck is a DD and costs me $100 week in just diesel alone. Also you have the more major services needed if you tow often, like transmission services every 15000k instead of every 30000k and so on. Then you take into account the payments for such a truck. And it racks up quickly that renting the equipment a few times a year pays for itself.
