Also you have the more major services needed if you tow often, like transmission services every 15000k instead of every 30000k and so on. Then you take into account the payments for such a truck. And it racks up quickly that renting the equipment a few times a year pays for itself.

x 1000 your very right on the mark there. I just did a engine oil service $125 (10qt's of delvac 1) fuel filter 35, trans internal and external + full fluid replacement with allison's Transyd $200 in fluid alone (including Tcase) both diffs 65. And I burn roughly 85 -100 bucks a week in fuel.

getting a reliable tow rig doesn't mean that u have to get a 2500 series or 1-1/2 ton truck that uses diesel --- of course they are strong as an ox --but if you are not hauling construction equipment everyday-- any regular gasoline V8 on I6 and even some V6 p'ups will pull an E30 easily while still being halfway decent on mpg...
remember folks-- safe towing is not about the ability to pull.. its really about the ability to stop safely..

hell, i've towed 75 miles without incident using a '87 mighty max 2.6 4cyl w/5 spd-- it was really exciting to try to stop though ...

...then, a good trailer can run anywhere between $1200 to $2500 which is not that bad - for me I rent because -- figure I'll use 12-15 times annually @ $60. approx $720. i then have to figure for liscensing and where to keep it.. so - i haven't really looked past rentals. i will snag one that may fall to $600 to $850 though!!!

Hell a 530iT or 540iT will tow a twin axle trailer and car.

slick you are right but I dont just haul my tandem car hauler. We also have a 4 horse steel bumper pull trailer (weighs in at 5550 empty an dry) and a four star 4 horse slant load with 10' to the short wall living quarters in it goose neck (weighs around 11.5K empty an dry)

so my needs are grater than that of a 1/2 ton, I really should get a 1 ton. I will say it one more time if you can aford a decent diesel its the way to go. If not buy what you need.

I know my 1/2 ton tahoe I had a few years ago didn't have a problem towing. I once towed a e32 on a 18 foot heavy duty trailer. But the biggest thing on it was it didn't like to stop the load it was pulling. Even those uhual car haulers were pulled very easily with different cars on it but it was always stopping the heavy load that was a challenge. But then again I need more than a 1/2 truck can offer me too so thats the biggest reason I drive a 3/4 ton. My next truck though will probably be a CAT powered 2 ton F750 though. But mainly because I am going to need more towing power in the next few years.

I've towing with my friends 3/4 ton duramax, pulled like crazy and braking wasn't a problem. I then pulled the same car with a different friends safari van, and let me tell you, never again! No brakes, no power, and insane fuel consumption.
