    What to do now?

I was reading, yet again, the SCCA class rules and realized the LSD in the '88 325is means I'm not STS legal, but would go to STX.

There's no way in hell the car would be competitive in that class and DSP means a new set of wheels and R-compounds!

    DAMN!

drive your car and have fun?

unless you're trying to be nationally competitive, don't worry about it - few of us have the cubic dollars required to reach that level anyway. :p

Trust me your going to be more competitive in STX than DSP. At least while starting out...Stay in STX cram as big a tire/wheel as you can, get some Konis, camber plates, a big front bar, 400lb front springs, 500-600lb springs in back remove the rear swaybar.
Autox that for awhile in STX. It's a decent car there. Not the best by any means. But then again it's not the best for DSP either.

The E30 I purchased, not here yet from the shipping company, is already coming with these suspension mods.

Ground Control coilovers, Koni SA's, #450 front #300 rear (so I'm assuming a true coilover or misprint, due to rear spring rate) Eibach ERS springs, billet camber plates, the Eibach adjustable sways front and rear, Sparco front strut bar.

16 x 7 SSR comps (which shouldn't be a problem to sell), so those will have to up for sale to get some good 17 x 8's, and then hope I can roll the fenders enough to get some 245's under them.

I also am going to use the car for fun, ie track days, but want to keep the prep to a point that will be legal in an Auto-X class.

nando, I agree with you on the fun part, but all of us are competitive, and even though I don't want/expect to be nationally competitive, being at the bottom all the time isn't fun either!

Guess I also need to go over the BMW CCA rules as well.

My Spec E30 gets bumped into Prepared class because of the stripped interior. With my local club, there's usually an excellent chance I will win because I'm the only guy running F/P!
Go, have fun. If your club is any decent size, there's going to be guys running that will hand you your ass driving cars that are worse than yours. Really good autocrossers are tough to beat. I just do it for fun. I have enough cheap trophies collecting dust in my house already.

Don't read anymore of that book, it'll make your head spin.

Not aimed at you but winning by default defeats the purpose of racing. Competition is the only thing that will make you better.

'Tis true, but I've found that setting goals of making a specific course time works effectively also. Autocross is just as much about racing against yourself as it is the other competitors. My car is hardly built to the rules in F/P, and would lose handily to someone who seriously built to compete in the class. So I compare my times to the comparable SP class and use that as my goal.
Another good way to force improvement is share you car with another driver of similar experience. Makes your own spec class that way. :)
