Went drifting in my e30 for the first time.

Went to a local drift practice at a track. Loved the way my car handled, very tossable and didn't under steer once all night. Didn't do too well drifting obviously cause it was my first time out, i hate my open diff. Power from my chipped 325e was almost adequate.

    Pics to come soon.

An LSD would have made the power adequate.

I have a 4.10LSD with my "I" engine and slide on all season 195's, power is not enough. I am going to 175's and getting some headers to attempt to be able to slide third.

LSD would be a very good start.

4.10 lsd is a MUST mod for your e30 if u want to drift, i tried drifting an 87 325e sedan, all stock, and it was i bit of a job compared to my 86 325

4.10lsd is too high of a gearing on a stock 325i. I know because I drove an open diff 4.10 325i for 2 months until I got another diff. A 4.10 on a 325e is suicide (and useless).

Stick with no higher than a 3.73, doesnt matter what you have under the hood of that e30. If it's a Getrag 260, there's no point in ever going above a 3.73....ever.

I can't maintain RPMs while sliding in 3rd gear. Won't switching to 3.73 make this worse?

Not as far as I've experienced, because you can make better use of 2nd gear and not need to shift.

The main problem with the 4.10 is that the gears become to short to make good use of it with low power, and it gets impossible to get any use of it with anything above 200hp.

but you also have a z3 3.0 short shifter coupled with that diff you have, so at third gear, you definitely will not hold RPM. maybe keep your diff and go z3 1.9 short shifter for more RPMs on third...? are you going to the July 12 event? I think Jesse30 is going; I'm going and two other e30s are going, so that's a total of 4 e30s drifting that day. You should come, Jon and represent, :D

I just got my open 3.73 welded together and that shit feels hella tight! i'm still getting used to DD it especially when turning cuz it just wants to slide out all the time, haha. i can't wait for rain season, lol

QFT, that shifter makes all the differences.

Wait, what? Since when does a shifter affect RPMs?

i have to disagree. ive run every shifter bmw makes in my s52 car with the z4 3.0 shifter i could get another 1k rpm in 3rd gear. i would shift at 7200 normally but with that z4 lever id shift at 8k and it stayed together
