I know there are advantages to having coilovers, that's why I have them on my car. And although I might sound like a hypocrite, I have not cornerweighted it yet but I have the capabilities to do so (just never the time.) For anyone who walks into my shop though, I will always recommend something closer to stock simply for the ease of use especially on a daily driven car. If the OP is spending a lot of time on the track and can set the car up well the coilovers would be great, but the H&R Cup Kit is very low but not that stiff so going with some Race springs would still feel like a nice upgrade for less money I think. When that gets old, sell the races and buy the coilovers but having H&R do your setup for you first always seems like a good idea to me... :D -
Get E30 M3 offset CABs. These will increase caster angle which intern increase negative camber when you turn the wheel.Leave a comment:

6" is too long front and rear. the ix struts are pretty well different - in order to shorten the housings, you'd need custom inserts. one guy did it, ground control did the R&D for him. No idea what that cost - I already had konis and a guy who did a fantastic job modifying the perches so I wasn't about to go down that route$$$.
I could have simply lowered the perch I guess, but it's not like there's lots of ix's running around with coilovers - I really didn't know how it was going to turn out.
Note to self. Nando is piloting an IX.:blowup:Leave a comment:

Right. Wondered why a 6" spring was to long-but I was thinking front for some reason.:-)I don't have a problem with droop as long as I don't leave my car in the air for too long - the konis have enough rebound stiffness to keep the springs in place until I put the car back on the ground again (it's plenty enough time to change both wheels on each side). and I can't really lower the perches in the back :pLeave a comment:

what, you don't like the 150lbs of ballast (usually several 50lb couble bar weights) bolted to your passenger floor? I saw one setup with a 4' rod welded to the floor - it was scary looking. I can just imagine somebody getting impaled by that, after the weights break loose and bloody the poor guy to death.
I don't follow spec E30 closely....But I can say that guys shouldn't struggle to make minumum weight because they are all too light. That's dumb.....
At the very least 2500 would allow the car to be gutted, those parts could be sold. And a real nice cage built to get back up to 2500.........
A lighter car would be considerably cheaper to tow, buy brakes, wheel bearings, tires, etc for on top of being able to sell off things removed from the car. There is NO GOOD REASON for not lowering the weight limits.Leave a comment:

Do you think that lowering the perch although more work might be the better answer?
Maybe allowing more droop travel before unseating the spring and or pulling a front tire? Just thinking out loud here.Leave a comment:

yep - corner weighting is just an advantage.
fiddle - no, I haven't actually. My problem is the 6" springs I have are too long, I'm at the bottom of my perches - I need 5" springs which will give me some range and allow for corner weighting.
In the meantime, am I happy with my spring rate setup and ride height? did it improve my handling over the H&Rs and even ride quality to some degree? Was I able to pick a spring rate specifically for my car, driving style/ability and tastes? hell yes! Being able to corner weight is simply the icing on the cake.
and I'm pretty certain you can't corner weigh a car with standard springs anyway, so you can shut up now. ;)Leave a comment:

Ha ha not picking on ya. Just you have posted the most lately and I don't know how to double quote becaue I'm dumb.
An important note, having nothing to do with effectiveness in this context.....Spec E30 cars are HEAVY.....My autox car even without being gutted will be at least a few hundred LBS lighter.
Those springs on other cars will not lower as much as on a spec E30, and will seem stiffer than on a spec E30.
IMO SPEC E30 would do VERY well to lower weight limits a good 300lbs. This would improve racing by allowing more agressive braking, make the cars more fun, and more reliable........Obviously faster-the more fun part....
IMO there stands a good chance to make the cars safer too.Leave a comment:

The advantages aren't just the ability to corner weight the car. The biggest advantage is in CHOOSING what spring rate you want, AND the ability to change those spring rates easily. And if you look in the right places inexpensivelyLeave a comment:

You realize that about 17% of r3v member will actually take the time to set up their coilovered cars, right? Coilovers that have not been set up properly (Yes, with scales and all that other shit) are completely pointless and a waste of money. For the everyday driver, and most other folks too, it's best to go with a setup where most of the hard work has been done for you. Spec E30 wouldn't use H&R Race springs if they sucked...
That may be true, but I'd guess of those in this section with coilovers that number may be significantly higher....People in this section buy coilovers to use them not to SLAM the car even lower than possible with anything else.Leave a comment:

Meh, most get coilovers to be able to play with ride height.
Me as an individual person doesn't need to drop the coin on some scales, if someone is that worried about it, you take it to a race shop and have them setup the car.
A good race shop should be able to corner balance and align the car in a couple of hours.
We aren't talking quantum physics here.Leave a comment:
