I searched for these things and didn't find much. Is this an alternative to a steering rack swap? I dont want something that extreme but anythings better than stock

If it comes with reasonable price, i think this is the real deal, not to mention if its adjustable ( LTL ratio) to your specific preference.
And might be alot simpler to install it?

I think summit might have this under the dirt track section. I remember seeeing this years ago and passively wanting it for autoX.

Someone here has something like that on a black 325ix. I think the iX had a part made for a jeep or something, though.

I've seen them alternatively called a steering ratio quickener.

me and a couple of friends have installed 2:1 ratios
makes the car 2 turns lock to lock.

Driving with it? AWESOME
Drifting and any enthusiastic driving ? Equally as awesome.

They can be had for $112 from Coleman racing products.

Since there's no room in the engine bay i took out the steering column and cut the outer tube enough to make room for the quickener and its end fittings.
I welded 2 pieces of bar steel to make the column whole again and made a bracket to bolt the quickener to.

then i cut the shaft and took the 2 splined ends that fit onto the quickener on the lathe and enlarged the hole so it made a snug fit on the shaft without "wobble" and welded them.

Make sure it rotates without binding before you weld everything in place.

And install it the right way and not backwards as a friend did...

I was looking on BMWs website messing around. They have an option called active steering. Is this similar to that in a sense?

Not similar to active steering, it is just a different steering rack ratio. This would be pretty nice for autox(puts you in SM - main reason I haven't messed with it) or drifting where you are making big movements. On a road course I'm not sure I would want a quicker ratio, but then again it's all personal preference.

OT but does an e36 rack also put you in SM?

gstuning, does the splines line up directly to stock e30 steering column?
did you have to weld / fabricate to get it functions properly or you bought the kit?

they don´t line up in / out but that´s not a problem when fabricated.

Did you make a custom coupler to connect both ends ( top & bottom), or just use a lathe?
( i'm not sure by looking at the pictures)
