I successfully ran my 318is in both DSP, and SM [where i beat out a symmilarly preped s50E30] Finished 2nd in OVR SM class... but was soundly beat pretty often.

    Set up:
    H&R Race
    Bil sports
    Vorslag Camber plates
Cabrio front bar [21mm] Attached at the strut like M3s [not DSP legal from what i understand]
    19mm SS rear bar
3.73 LSD [helped on fast/MOST courses]

    Jim C chip
    M20 flywheel
    Otherwise stock

225/50-14 Hoosier A3S05 with over a seasons worth of use. And they are old, not as grippy as A6 or V710s. But they work.

    Car was on rails.

it really depends on what your local competition is like - I could say I beat things like corvettes, vipers, austin martins, audi RS8s.. but it's meaningless because their drivers suck.

so basically, don't worry about your car too much. pick a class and try to maximise the rules as best as you can, but focus mostly on your driving, because the car doesn't matter as much unless you're already a fantastic driver. I'm not, so band-aids like bigger motors and sticky tires help me keep up with the joneses, but if you gave me a 500whp porsche I'd probably be slower than in my own POS. :p

The M3 links are S/P legal.

So given the choice, would you rather go to FSP, or be allowed to swap in an M20 and race in DSP?

Your kinda stuck in between things classing wise as it is now huh?

Man now that's a tough one. Do I go with a known competitive set up or try an unknown and go for broke? FSP or DSP? I'd say I would prolly take FSP just for the challenge.

Personally, the FSP class here is nonexistent, and i rather like the little M42. So im my own way, id rather be the underdog in a DSP class than the outright winner in a lethargic FSP class.

I 'might' actually be able to get out this coming spring....So I'm cruising around all the area regions......NOTHING in DSP.

That sucks. There was a decent E46 in DSP in Toledo a couple years back.....That's about it....

But at least the car will be a good DSP car for bigger events. FWIW I will probably do what you are doing and run in SM.

Im looking to build up a spare M42 motor with the M47 crank, S50 Rods, and S50 Pistons to make it into a 2.1L and around 200hp at the crank. Keeping it in SM, with 225 or 215 V710s on 16X7 wheels. I *think* i can go with an E36 steering rack, but if not ill find an E30 M3 rack which should be legal.

Other than that, it would be nice to fix the ABS, but im very used to threshold braking.

THAT is how you improved so fast (I went back and checked results when you mentioned you beat Garrick)

A couple weekend when my ABS wasn't working flipped a switch.....It's hard to divebomb into a corner when your tires will just lock up without ABS.

FWIW that may be the best way to go in SM even if you were building a full tilt SM E30. Turbo'd 4cyl is going to be lighter than a turbo 6. And S50/52 swaps won't have the cojones necessary

Thats future plans. I ran this season with a stock M42 and A3S05's!

And i sorely disagree. An s50 E30 is very fast once sorted out. I drove a friends at the last event. Hit 2 cones on my last run... other wise i would of run 9th FTD. ON worn R6's in 50 degree weather.

Same here, seems like only one car is in FSP and a couple in DSP.

No no, I didn't mean the engine, I meant the lack of ABS

SM isn't so bad around here, mostly because it's the big, bad scary class so most people don't even try. I'd get pwned in DSP, ironically. Well, maybe not now, because the guy who kept kicking my ass in an E36 sold it to some other kid who can't drive. Now he kicks my ass in a formula car. haha.
