So what you think of my cage?

Thought I would post this up and see what the guys have to say.

Don't mind those stupid gussets in the X bar door that do nothing.

Looks like solid job. Is there a 2nd bar going to the foot protection? Can't tell from the picture the steering column is blocking the view.

Any pics of the top of the main hoop so we can see where everything intersects? Also pics of the gussets attaching to the body would be nice :)

Any reason you didn't finish the gussets on the door bars?

It kind of looks like the bars coming through the firewall hit the node at the dash bar.

Looks very nice. Are all tubes welded on 360 degrees?

How would you guys feel about a roll cage with the main hoop set about two inches further back in the corners "inside" the rear seat bottom for us taller guys? Out of the question?

                      Like this:

                      E30 M3 Roll Cage

It's no problem at all. That is a pretty strong area and if one feels the need it can be reinforced as well. The first cage I designed for my JS M3 back in '00 I had the main hoop mounted there.

My car is almost done at the fabricator and it's done the same way. In fact, my cage will be very similar to the one in the thread above...some minor changes.

                      Cheers.

Thanks guys, the only issue I have with the cage is that the main hoop diagonal is going the wrong way, aka it's for a LHD car where this is RHD.

The cage is welded thru a full 360deg, we also didn't make use of plinth blocks as it is not required by our rules body here in South Africa, but it is all re inforced.

Reason that there are no real gussest on the cage is due to not having a Dimple Die, and press.

In the future I would like to change the door bar to a 3d X as it is basically just a skin with a hinge and a catch, and the main hoop diagonal.

Also look at the Trans Tunnel, the previous owner was going to fit some type of Iron Block V8 into this car :S

These are the only pictures I currently have, when the car is back from paint. I will be able to snap some more, along with the other custom made goodies, aka tubular control arms... etc etc.

J/k, Great job stiffening up the diff mount too!

I am currently building a rollcage for my 2002 racecar with S14 motor. The main hoop is aligned with the B pillar, and the harness bar is curved to the back for extra clearance with the seat. Also, the base of the A and B pillar (forward bars and main hoop) tubes are notched, and then welded directly on the rockers.

The most difficult part of the whole thing was deciding to strip all the paint off the car once the cage had been done...

So that mean't paint stripper and angle grinder, although it took my father and I just one weekend to from start to finish to strip it, and re primer the car. Glad we did there were like 5 different colours on the car.
