actually, there are two reasons, and you will need both to really answer your question.
the first is that the molecules that make up air (nitrogens, oxygens, and others) interact only very, very weakly with visible light. typically a photon of light will travel a great distance before interacting with something in the air. the second reason is a bit more interesting. even if the air molecules did scatter light very strongly, you would not actually see individual air molecules, rather just a haze or cloud of air. the individual air molecules are very small. they are so small in fact, that they are hundreds of times smaller than the wavelength of the visible light. because of this we can never see an image of air molecules with visible light.
edit: simply put, we are all color blind and dumb, so we must all gouge our eyes out in order to solve this issue.
