Time is running out, If I dont get any more serious bites today or tomorrow I may wind up getting a new o2 censor and a new universal cat installed, get this thing smogged and registered.

mine was failing horribly on NO(x) and i replaced the o2 sensor AND put a universal cat.. it STILL failed! when i compared an OEM BMW cat to the aftermarket one.. the OEM cat is like a good foot and a half longer... BMW wanted $1900 for a brand new cat. i said fuck it and paid someone to smog my car.

Do you remember how far off the Nox was?

            Here are mine:

            15mph,
            RPM: 1556
            %CO2: 11.0
            %O2: 5.3
HC PPM - MAX: 95 MEAS: 125 (Fail)
            CO % - MAX: 0.58 MEAS: 0.35 (Pass)
NO PPM - MAX: 997 MEAS: 1421 (Fail)

            25mph,
            RPM: 1540
            %CO2: 11.1
            %O2: 5.2
HC PPM - MAX: 77 MEAS: 100 (Fail)
            CO % - MAX: 0.63 MEAS: 0.24 (Pass)
NO PPM - MAX: 850 MEAS: 1028 (Fail)

Not sure if I did it right but the Lambda calculator says its running lean.

Thats a good deal right there, and you'd be good to go for 2 years.

As far as your NO(x) numbers.. i was about the same, labelled as a gross polluter! I have not done any head work to my car (which it needs bad, burning 1quart of oil every 3 weeks), and it had overheating issues before i replaced everything in my cooling system, down to the hoses, radiator, t-stat, waterpump, etc. in fact im sure my last test before just "getting it done" was at 1600's. I just needed to buy some time till i got everything sorted out..

Damn that's a steal. Any idea if I actually have to bring the car to him? My e36 has it's motor up for some new goodies but my smog is already past due. I might try to remember this post and PM you later when the car is put back together and tuned.
