Not really, no. I don't notice it as much on the highway but that may be because of the wind and other noise that comes with that speed. It's as loud at 2mph as it is at 50
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

haha you and everyone else has asked for it. Im gonna keep the engine, in storage. PS the average s14 sells for more than 5k now days

idk man. i hate 4 cylinders so much i almost sold the M3. buyer went mia so ill just swap it to something with 2 more cylinders. A smooth 6 in a GT car is pure heaven.

it's gotten better now that some miles have been put on it. it's the sound and vibration of 4 cylinders that i hate. it sounds just like an S2000 or a shitty civic.
You own the wrong car, sell the M3 to someone who appreciates it for what it is. At the very least, see if you can trade someone who already has a screwed up e30 M3 with the wrong motor (any car with the wrong motor no matter how well it was done is screwed up.) The world doesn't need another f-ed up e30 m3 with the wrong motor. You do realize doing a motor swap will cost as much as buying an e30 M3 with a motor swap. $15k buys you one hell of a bad ass S14.

Hey, look at it this way, I absolutely loath the sound of a V8. They flat out sound like crap (well, a motorboat but same difference.) especially anything built in the US. Some of the Italian ones sound better, but still not good. I love vintage racing, but as soon as the Can Am and Trans Am cars come out, I do my best to get as far away as I can.

I happen to love high revving 4 cylinders. I can't stand Hondas, because yes, they sound like crap (A Miata is the all time worst), but an S14 does not sound anything like a Honda or Mazda motor. The S2000 doesn't sound all that horrid however.

I do agree that a well tuned straight 6 is such a sweet sound. Like ripping silk at high revs. Nissan L series with big carbs are some of the best sounding. Still, a 3.5L CSL at full song is a beautiful thing to hear.

The only time an E30 M3 should have a 6 cyl, is if its an Alpina B6 3.5S or a very well done clone of one. (Gotta be an S38 though.)

Keep the S14 where it belongs. It really is a great motor and is just fine on a 10+ hr trip (been there and done that. I'd do it again any time, any day.) It really doesn't do anything poorly aside from sitting in a garage for months.

It happens as long as the car is vibrating, but past that it has no real rhyme or reason. It'll squeak if I'm going at the same speed on a perfectly flat road (off and on, not a constant squeak), and it sometimes does it stopped at a red light with the engine on. It seems like it does it more over rough patches than over big bumps or dips. If I push down on the rear with the car off it doesn't happen.

              Any ideas?
I'm gonna go with diff bearing or rear wheel bearings.

Cary, i'll need a hand this fall in dropping in the S52. but i want to do w/o any damage to the harness, so that when i can put 15k into my S14 it can go back in w/o issue.

That's no problem, chassis and engine harness are untouched. Only the s52 harness gets chopped up.

BMW had the option to run a straight 6 when they designed the M3, they chose to start new with the S14 because it was lighter and created a better weight balance. This is very well documented. An S14 belongs in only two cars, the M3 or the 320IS. Nothing else. If a 2002 needs more go, pull the head, send it to someone who knows how to do a good port and polish job, add a cam and big carbs and go from there.

Yes I am a purest when it comes to keeping a car whole, I'm not a purest when it comes to modifying the correct motor to be bad ass. In the case of the M3, the motor makes the car, otherwise its pretty much just an E30 with a very expensive and very effective body kit. (A bit over simplified, but you get the idea.)

Fuck, I hope it's not that. There's no vibrations or anything, and it's not a consistent whine at all. Just squeaks off and on.
