Is it a e36 tensioner? Is it loose? If its the original, it might be worth getting the E36 tensioner since my guess is that the timing chains are a bit stretched anyway. If its the stock one, doesn't it have a bleed valve on the end to pressurize it? If so is that broken or loose? I'll be optimistic and say its an easy and comparatively cheap fix (as opposed to building a new motor ;) ) Clean the area up, replace the tensioner and see what happens.

Will this is the first time i've even looked at this side of the engine. i have no clue what type it is. but it seems to maybe leaking from it. im just hoping it's not the headgasket

Can't remember if its the s50 or s52 tensioner that goes on the s14. Doesn't look like a new oil leak though, looks like something been leaking for loooong time.

I'd clean the area up first and run it a bit to see where its leaking from. With that much oil build up, I'd guess it would be pretty easy and quick to find.

thx Will. it's had a light leak since i bough it back in October.

when i went out and wiped it down all the fresh oil was on the tensioner and when the engine is running it's 1 drop per 1/2 second. dripping off the rubber stem.
