Its a 10 hour drive from Salem to Napa, on I5. I did this very same drive when I bought my M3, only I started in Vancouver Canada. Fuel stop at the Canadian border, fuel at Vancouver Wash, fuel in Rogue River (I was tempted to push it to Medford, but didn't know how accurate the fuel gauge is.) Rogue River to Williams, and home. I think it was about an 18 hr trip, but I started a lot further north than Tacoma (I got stuck in rush hour traffic in Tacoma) I also did the run in December, but there was no snow or bad weather at all. Its not a bad drive, make sure you have some toons though, especially if you don't have any company.
I made the run from up and down to Redding a couple weeks ago and didn't see much CHP activity. Traffic was doing 80+.
Good luck
