NOR-CAL General Chat.
So I've seen a couple build threads being tossed around and some coilovers on the wristing-of-da-craigs that seem to take the rear trailing arm end of an e30 and make it into a full coilover (an actual strut, not just spring + adjuster + separate shocks).
It kinda got me thinkin.. What's the actual benefit of this over the trailing arm system..? I know the rear shock towers would have to be reinforced a lot, but so far... The only plus I can think of is making the rear into a strut and actually having rear struts in the rear of an e30.
Picture:
These are e30 application as advertised on the site. Notice how the rears are struts not shocks + springs
Having the pain right up in the fresh wound in the mouth though... UghLast edited by JinormusJ; 09-19-2013, 04:57 PM.Comment

mechanically there is no difference.
structurally, the top mount was never designed to handle the weight of the car, but the rear upper spring perches were. The lower shock mounts also were not designed with the full car weight in mind, but they are fairly beefy.
anyway, those 32-way adjustable coils aren't actually good performance suspension.Comment

Ohhh man.. Only time over EVER cried from pain. Not when I broke my leg, or sprained my arm, or dislocated my shoulder... Nothing

There really isn't too much difference functionally, the main disadvantage of the current spring location is that it actually bends the spring, GC makes a cool "weight jack" that solves this issue by allowing a pivot point, but for some reason they don't make 'em for E30s.. only E36 and E46. The only other difference would be if you want to run a stupid high rate it would probably be less stressful for the trailing arm to run it at the shock location instead of the equivalent (over 2x) rate on the trailing arm, if that makes sense.
Supposedly the shock tower reinforcement necessity has been blown out of proportion but honestly, functionally you really aren't missing out on much and I wouldn't bother unless it really bugs you to have them inboard. Money would be much better spent on a set of quality dampers.paint sucksComment
