Purely anecdotal but my uncle smoked 3 packs a day for years. Started occasionally in high school and was up to 60 daily in his 40's. Then he realized one day that he's never really enjoyed smoking and just stopped cold turkey. He's tried cigarettes after he stopped and can't finish one. Even if he's around other people who are smoking he's not tempted.
