I've been tossing around the idea of worm gears. Was a fun idea while I was researching rear diffs a while back
Going by theory: both are good, but if I'd hop off the fence for either or, it would be for clutch-type diffs

    Rebuilding a diff isn't four-figure job though
Wangang-resident-diff-master-san sells rebuilt/upgraded BMW units for $850 if I remember correctly and that's with upgraded and extra clutch packs and completely refinished/refurb'd internals

Definitely 3.25 LSD for an Eta.

I have one that grinds that you can have for cheap. New clutches and you have a solid diff.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

The problem with going too short on the gears is not just highway cruising, it's shift frequency and gear placement. So say there is a set of corners you would normally use second in, and you put something shorter in the car, then second is too short to use for those corners and you are stuck using either the very top of second or the bottom of third. It sounds nitpicky but it's annoying to work around. The 4.10 I've got is great for track use but terrible around town. You never stop shifting and first gear tachs out at like 25mph.

          I'd do the 3.25.

He is driving it. The brake just need to be replaced badly. That is easy to do.

he should do brakes, suspension, diff, and wheels/tires at the same time.

that is way overkill for an e30 unless you're running 245-wide slicks
