Most Toyota engines are non-interference. Even the famous 4AGE in the AE86 was non-interference, as was the Miata's b6 and b8 engines.

Honda loved their non-interference yet timing belt engines back in the day.

my compression is excellent. it's just a meh engine from day one. i even did check the timing bc it was so boring. but i have a few extra blocks, and another head. and some high compression pistons would give me a fun m20

To be honest, I wouldn't say I "like" my E34 unless it's pinned in 2nd about 3500 RPM. And yes, I know it isn't a sports car and it's more of a land yacht but my E34 has been daily driven it's whole life and it looks the part, it's ugly, makes weird creaky noises, wheels have years of brake dust neglect, seats are old and shit, it smells funny and to be honest, I don't think I could even sell it for more than 2000 as it sits. I honestly don't think I care enough about the car to do "tasteful" mods and spend as much as possible on "good" parts. I want it to just be raw and nasty.
