Until the last few months I've always had 6 cylinder e30's and e36's. My little m42 is fun to rev the balls off of and maybe a bit more balanced, but the term "delicate" certainly hits the nail on the head. I'm trying my best to keep the car an m42, but if that motor blows, 24 valves will be moving into that engine bay.
In it's defense, the m42 was a sample of the technology to come in the m/s5x motors of the near future. From a strictly e30 standpoint though, I have to say the m20 in all its archaic timing belt snapping, valve smashing glory is more fun to work on and sounds better, but that's just me....or maybe I'm just getting old
