Actually I was gonna make a thread on that in the m42 section. Going on m42club will convince you to like an m42. These guys know their shit and many consider it to be a better engine than an m20 for various reasons. The bottom end is strong as hell (all forged) and can take what you can throw at it, and with a .140" MLS hg you're looking at about 8.5-8.6:1 compression, add ARP studs and you're good for a turbo up to fairly high PSI and making 250+ at the wheels. There are no rockers to break and no valve adjustments. I honestly don't get why no one gives it a chance. I've been talking to a guy on here with a turbo'd m42 with I believe not much more than forged pistons and maybe new rods but he's planning on getting 400 at the wheels when he's done. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

M44 is cast, m42 are forged. At least that's what I've read multiple times..
And Eric that's just ignorant and you know it :) if it can handle boost then there's no need for two more cylinders. And everything I've heard points to m42's being able to handle reasonable boost. I think I'll make a thread in the m42 section so people can share knowledge in one place on this forum. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Edit: so even if they are cast, what's the likelihood of cracking one at low boost (under 1 bar)? The first car I ever rode in was an e30

So what takes the most stress: crank/rods or pistons? I would think the rods, but I have no clue. The first car I ever rode in was an e30
