It needs to be CARB approved. You might be able to get away with a 49 state cat, but A) the shop might not put it in for you. B) The smog shop might not pass visual.

I wouldn't put in a 49 state CAT. Magnaflow makes CARB legal ones, get the right one for your car. Re-welding and buying a new CAT is not worth the few $ saved the first time around.
