North County San Diego is funkin beautiful. Can be a little expensive but nice
Hippie? Nice stereotype. Would have made more sense if you said I was a Marine.

Yes, it's beautiful. But a politically retarded place.

However, this state hates people who are trying to succeed (unless by theft, then it is sanctioned) and there is a political nightmare happening in Sacramento. Liberty and freedom do not exist here; political figures and unions get richer while kids suffer in school and non-union workers get the shaft. Too many people are on the take and not enough are working to support the folks who move here from other countries or other states.

The worst part is that the majority of people I run into in SoCal are so self-absorbed, they couldn't be bothered to pay attention to what is happening in Sacramento or even outside their door. It is a sad state of existence. Truly.

That said, there are pockets of people who are genuine and give a damn about things. Surround yourself with them if you can. If things change for me regarding my family or work situation, I will leave this state in a heartbeat. Northern Arizona or back down south. It is hard to live somewhere that a delta smelt is valued more than a human's access to fresh water. It really shows the sad state of things.

these two tracks put words into how i feel about living, loving and struggling with california. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It's hard, but everythings here, and within reach if you're willing to work for it.

This is a very good read! lol.

"35 Things Only Real Angelenos Know About L.A."

There are observations any outsider can make about Los Angeles, such as: every waiter or waitress you meet is secretly an actor or actress waiting for their big break.

    6. Oh! And we also measure distances by time not by miles like most other Americans. You see, none of us knows how many miles it is to anywhere. But we can tell you the time it’ll take you get there within three minutes.

    7. There is never a good reason to go the Valley. …Unless you live in the Valley, or you need to go to Fry’s or the Burbank airport.

    8. We popularized eating gourmet food off of a truck. If you come to L.A. we will prove it to you by talking about food trucks incessantly. Some of us follow our favorites on Twitter. Like, a first date might take you to a food truck festival. True story.

Check out the San Fran Bay Area.
If you love cycling, fresh air, natural beauty, down to earth ppl, etc...

There are lots of nice and affordable places outside the city.

I think you'd like Berkeley, or love the Berkeley-rockridge area of Oakland.

Lived here all my life. In 2000 I paid 1850 for a 2 bed house in 90266 with a one car garage.
in 02 I paid 2200 for a 3 bed 2 car in N. Redondo Paid 1650 for a 2db 1 car Apt in N. Redondo till I moved inland and bought a 5BR 3 car in Moreno Valley was paying $2400. Lost the house in 2008 Moved to a really nice 4br 3 car in 92503 pool huge lot orange trees $1850/mo owner got foreclosed in late 2010 Moved to a 5 b/r 4car quad in 92508 with over 2 acres in the city. Best Garage ever! House had been used as a grow house by previous renters and they put insulation in the whole garage. Cool in summer and quiet! I could wrench late and no one ever complained. 2100/mo. Foreclosure notices started arriving in the mail and I had to move after being there just about a year. Now Im in 92506 with a 3br 2car for 1900/mo. I hate the garage way too tight. The point I guess is that I've been paying the same rent for the last 15+ years but I moved from the best area to a somewhat less than best area. Not really close at all. You should figure where it is likely you would find work draw a circle around that area to represent commute times up to your max. I did a 56 mile each way commute from Dana Point to Compton took 90+ mins each way. It will eat you up and your car too. So make the biggest circle your longest drive and see whats in the circle. Over all I would say CA has gotten much safer over the last 15-20 yrs. But it's weird, you can have a nice high end street and the next block is total crap. With the economy like it is I think theft will increase and then violent crime will follow. You don't want to be in a fringe spot when that happens. Try to check out the area in person if you can, loud neighbors can spoil a great rent price. People here tend to be pushy and the pace is likely much faster than you are used to. There are some fantastic places to live besides the beach but be aware more than 45 minutes inland and the summer temps will keep you inside for those 4 months. It's harder and harder to find a a reasonable place for a good price but they are out there.
