CA DMV and parts car reg backfees

Bought a 97 Z3 with a decent amount of backfees a few days ago and I plan to pull out the m52, transmission, diff, and everything else needed to BAR the e30.

Apparently I have to pay the backfees in order for pick n pull to come get the z3 after I'm done with it.

Anyone have any experience? Should I trailer it to a metal scrap yard (friend of mine did that recently with success) Or is there a way to waive or something?

It's possible to get the penalties waived, and I detailed how in the link below. It's actually really easy, the only catch is that it depends on a manager being willing to sign off on waiving the fees. I was persistent and firm about the manager having the authority and me having met the legal requirements. She didn't want to sign off on it, but it was past closing, I was the last customer, and I wasn't going anywhere until I got what I wanted. That being said, the guy next to me bought an abandoned RV for $5 and had to pay $800 in fees to get it put in is name. So it's a crap shoot.

I would suggest printing out the relevant code section, dressing professional, and be polite but firm. Good luck!

Cut it up and scrap it. Less work than spending a day at the DMV hoping that you can get it waived.

Metal scrappers generally will be fine as long as you’ve taken all the fluids out. It’s best to get the fuel tank out so it’s not even a discussion.

This is also the best answer, no reason to pay money to dispose of a car. I've also hear that if it has at least 2 wheels, Kars 4 Kids will take it without a title, even if it's parted out.

As long as you have the title you should be able to give it to a junkyard without issue. Unless something has changed since the last car I junked. But cutting and scrapping is always a good route too. You can probably find somebody to pick it up for you and everything.

you can either get a junk slip from the DMV (no $$, don't have to pay back fees) or take it to a metal recycling place with the title (which they'll end up using to tell the DMV it was in their legal ownership when they junk it).

same difference, really. I've done this with a couple cars with a variety of legal fees and questionable status.

out of curiosity, how destroyed is the z3's exterior? I may be interested in pieces here and there.

That's good information, especially if I find myself in another situation with a car I actually want to keep. I'm trying to avoid the DMV like the plague, but i'll try it as a last ditch effort! Thanks!

This is slowly seeming like the better option. I sold a buddy this total piece of shit Saab for like $45 and he didn't have time to register it and was able to pawn it off to a metal recycler fully intact, but my mileage may vary with the same place.

I'm intrigued by the Kars 4 Kids preposition as I would rather not have to trailer it somewhere myself. It's going to be missing the entire drivetrain and the braking system so I'm not sure if they'd still take it?

The problem with the junk slip thing is that I believe I have to be the registered owner and according to the CA DMV site I still have to pay some fees?

I have the title blank aside from the transfer signatures from the previous owner so I believe I can use that to give to a dismantler? I suppose proof of ownership might be a problem. The PO is local so I could approach him for a bill of sale.

As for the Z3's condition, the interior is shot and the exterior body panels seem to be in pretty decent shape. The catch is that the car was covered in epoxy and painted green with glitter. It's also got big metal teeth. I'm going to compile a build thread for my e30 soon and I'll have to snag some pics of it. If you're still interested in any exterior pieces let me know and I'll send you some pics!

coated in epoxy and glitter over the entire thing lol. It was pretty thrashed from the craigslist ad iirc

you don't need to be the registered owner to get a junk slip, you just need to trade them the title for it. may need to fill out a Statement of Facts.

you can also give the title to the dismantler, yes. pick n pull may be requesting the title to be in your name and paid up in case they try to reconstruct the car.

You shouldn't need a junk slip since you have the title.

I have probably junked 10 cars. None in my name.
