Why do you need to go back to Tacoma? The Picnic is in Issaquah... And you'd have to go to Tacoma from Issaquah anyways if you're going there afterwords.
I know the route will work. I grew up in Puyallup, and my best friend has a house on Mayfield Lake in Mossyrock. I've probably done the drive a hundred times. The drive is also very scenic and there are some good twisty roads.

I was thinking:
Portland Oregon - Centralia WA
Centralia WA - Yelm WA
Yelm WA - Spanaway WA
Spanaway WA - Tacoma WA
Just over 3 hrs travel time and it also takes 7 into tacoma.Leave a comment:

It might be a longer route than I-5, but it would sure beat sitting in traffic. Look in to getting off the 5 at highway 12 and heading through Mossyrock and then to Morton. At morton you get off and head north towards Elbe. At Elbe you get on what I think is 161. That takes you all the way in to Puyallup where you can get on 167 north to 405 and then I-90. The drive is really nice from Morton until you are almost to Puyallup.Leave a comment:

No, traffic south of Tacoma is basically non-existent.
