Hoping to bring my car this year, had some cooling system issues last year so we had to drive up in something else.

Edit: my kids took pics in the isetta that was there last year

So I'm a total paint/body work noob but I need my paint cleaned up on my car.. I can tell it's just real dirty and would look good with a claybar and buff? I don't know how to do it or what the process is.. Does someone want to help or give me some insight on how to start and what I'll need?

            Thanks!

I've seen claybars work wonders on shitty paint before. Definetly worth a try because its way cheaper than repainting the car (unless you're super anal about perfect paint). Also, I have never personally used a claybar on my car. As for buffing i use 3M compound/glaze, it's my personal favorite.
              Google is your friend ;)

Step 1: Wash and dry your vehicle
Step 2: Break off a small piece of clay that you will be working with and shape it into a flat surface
Step 3: Working in small 18" x 18" sections, mist the clay bar lubricant over your working area, so that every square inch is covered in clay lube
Step 4: Gently glide the clay bar over your working area using overlapping passes going left to right or up and down. Note: You do not want to rely on a lot of downward force to clean the paint. You should allow the clay to absorb the contamination. Stubborn contamination can require a good amount of time, clay lube and passes to remove.
Step 5: Continue working on an area until all contamination is removed. You can tell this has happened because the clay will slide effortlessly across the paint and you will not hear any contamination being picked up by the clay.
Step 6: Wipe off the excess clay lube with a microfiber towel
Step 7: Continue steps 3 - 6 until the entire car has been properly clayed
Note: Reshape your piece of clay after each section so that there is a clean fresh surface exposed. If you cannot reveal a fresh surface, break off a new piece of clay. To increase the life of your clay bar, spray the bar with a clay lube and store it in a clay bar storage container.

Directions make sense except I use a water hose to lubricate the clay bar rather than clay lube. Turned out OK for me. It is definitely worth the time, especially on black cars. I'd also use colored wax if you are like me and hate seeing old scratches filled in with white wax that stand out from the color of the car. This is my Benz back in 2005 after a claybar, buff and black wax.

                      nice benz! still have it?

The steps were good IMHO but I don't agree with tearing off pieces of your clay bar. Use the whole bar and knead it often, it will work just fine.

The point to tearing off pieces is that if you drop it, the whole bar isn't ruined by being filled with crap.

Never dropped one before but I get what you're saying. They're cheap, buy two and have a backup.

I appreciate the thought. I had seen them on Tirerack and I agree that is a great price for new Borbets. However, I am a major cheapskate and since I need tires anyway, I was hoping to get a used wheel set with decent used tires for about 400-500 bucks instead of $740 just for wheels alone. The search continues.
