    Swaps & Emissions in CO

I've been searching high and low all over r3v and the web, and can't find any info about passing Colorado(specifically Denver) emissions with a swapped car.

Does anyone have an m5x swapped car that has passed emissions? Any hiccups?

I have almost all the parts for the obd1 swap, but I also have the complete obd2 setup (including all the matching ews stuff & keys) and keep waffling about which way to go. I am going to be driving this daily and need it to pass emissions!

If I go with obd2, all I need is a driveshaft and I'd start swapping right away and sort that out when I got to it, but I love the clean engine and bay of the obd1 setup...

    Any advice/thoughts are really appreciated.

It's based off of the car, if the car is OBDI (anything 1995 or earlier), you only have to pass a sniffer (and a visual inspection depending on where you take it). If the car is OBDII, it has to retain all OBDII electronics. However this is only in counties that require emissions.

Okay, next question, where's the best place to take it for Denver to easily pass the visual inspection? :)

I've just gone to the e-test place in Boulder, and didn't have any problems.

That could be that the previous owner had gone above and beyond our requirements to make it legal in CA.

I really don't think you are going to have a problem monkey, they most likely won't realize that it is a swapped engine.

apparently in el paso county (CO springs) you don't have to pass emissions. so eventhough my roommate is from Longmont and needed a test for his car they wouldn't do it down here. Just something to think about, i'm not sure which counties have to have emission tests

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

most of them are dyno, but I know of a shop that does 2 speed tests for cars older than 82 or 83.

I live in Denver county and they do require emissions. I've owned several cars here, the oldest being a 92 honda accord (I'm sorry), and they have all been dyno tested.

Never had a car fail, but I'm also hoping they won't know the difference between the engines...

If I do have a problem, I'll probably go through the procedure to get it marked a custom vehicle. Running OBD1 like the car originally had will probably help my chances of passing without question.

Who's got an ecu and harness they want to sell me!? :)

as long as the engine runs properly and you have a catalytic converter, it should pass.

visual inspection should go ok as well, because those people don't get paid enough to give a shit (and it's unlikely they know anything about e30s)

mainly they're looking for leaks or signs that the car is crap, and even then, I saw one car dump half of it's coolant during the test and they still passed it.

As long as you don't have a barrel of nitrous or something plastered in radioactive stickers, it should be fine.....

I have an s50 swapped 90' 325. I live in Boulder and had to do the dyno test. Failed the first couple tries w/ basically straight pipe (the cat that was on there when I bought it was about 25% the size of a stock one. I was right over the limits, but just barely.

I finally gave in and got a new cat put on and it easily passed.

I'm wondering if I can use the cats from the e39 528 that the engine is coming from, I can weld my own setup so I might get creative...

I have late model E36 midsection, including cats and mine passed. I would assume that the E39 cats would work fine
