Could be it. I would imagine the rear seat insulates a lot.

Not as much as you'd think, I put the rear seat in with my 4.10 and it didn't muffle much, but I think removing the tar made shit a lot louder... Like I said thouh, it's a big improvement.

Gears whine. It happens. Definitely is to be expected without any rear sound insulation....

Sam, I will trade you one OBDI S52 w/ a 5 speed transmission for your 525i...

Gears do whine, I honestly think my 4.10 is still fine, it's just an old diff... If it were making ominous noises, then I'd be worried. But it whined as far back as I can remember, and it's had a few trips to HPR with that whine as well as a few autocrosses and thousands of daily driven miles.

Should be good then. Usually bmw diffs have about 1000 miles of life between the time they first start making odd noises to death.

I'm guessing you don't qualify whining as an odd noise cause mine's seen WELL over 1k miles while whining.... and... Where the hell do you get these numbers from...

Those numbers unfortunately come from real world experience. Word of advice: never run royal purple in your car. ever.

Orly? Might as well change the diff fluid then in the 3.73, lol.

My transmission was actually a lot louder when I switched from royal purple to redline. I liked the redline better though so it stayed.

The noise is really not concerning me lol... Like, it's there, but it's not bad at all... My 4.10 was whining a lot louder than the 3.73 and it lasted months and thousands of miles of hard driving

Louder doesn't necessarily mean that the gears aren't being lubricated as well. The Redline is a much thicker fluid so it will make the trans shift a little bit notchier when it's cold, but really protects the transmission at high temperatures and strain.
