That's a downhill bike. It's about as opposite as a 29er hardtail as you can get. I would venture to bet that you wouldn't ride it that much either. Don't get me wrong, I love bombing down trails, but 8" of travel isn't going to be much fun on the Front Range's climbing oriented and not very technical trails.

You are correct sir. Just looked at it again. The rear triangle with high chain stays threw me off...

If it's your first Mtb and your spending a grand, a hartail is a good bet...in fact, it's pretty much your only bet unless you want a pos dualie. Realistically, (no offense) as a
newbie, you'll hardly notice the difference between brands of 29ers, just pick one and go with it. You'll enjoy it, and if you really get into it, you'll know exactly what you want for your second bike. You won't find one bike that does it all...a hard tail is a good starting point to get ya riding, and go from there. Carefull if you go used, there are more shit hauled bikes around here than beat E30s!

Good advice. I think I learned the important brands to try out. By comparing specs between the few options I have they are so similar that there is no way I will tell a difference for my first bike. I have it narrowed down to two that I really want to try out this weekend. Nothing beats getting on the thing and taking it out. I just hope the weather is nice.

couldbase, i agree that rear triangle looks a tad bit gnarly/out of place relative to the rest of the bike.

and Ian, he said they are new to mountain bikes, not bicycles in general. thats a pretty broad generalization to say that they will "hardly notice the difference" between 29er hard tails. when riding in town on pavement, i have two friends that try to keep up with me on my 48x17t track bikes on their 29er hard tails (one aluminum gary fisher, the other is an aluminum niner). every once in a while we will trade and i can tell a drastic difference between the two hard tails, and i have ridden many more miles on road bikes than mountain bikes.

and while there are many used bikes that are ridden hard and put away wet, its not difficult to tell a pile driver from a good deal. i would never buy a used bike without seeing it with my own two eyes and taking it for a ride. i said craigslist, not ebay/pinkbike/ridemonkey.

What I mean is by not being a mountain biker I probably won't see the value in very slight difference in components. Sure if I go from a $800 bike to a $2,000 bike I will feel it. I think I am better picking a bike that fits me well and then learning what components I want upgraded, etc.

yeah i havent read much either but damnnnn I'm excited you getting a bike. e30s bikes gold. I love it. 800-900 will get you a lot. I vote go freeride. I have an sxtrail II that i've pimped out thoroughly, head to toe and it works like magic, I can freeride, downhill, and street the puppy. I get a lot of head turns like, hes doing what on that kind of bike?

Go through craigs, I have seen some dirty dirty bikes going for pretty cheap. I can make a lot of suggestions but I'd like to say stick with kona or cannondale for some nice mtn bikes, specialized can get pricey but the deals are def out there. do not get a big hit, i mean they are good and all, but are single pivot and your looking more to straight up downhill with those. your not going to be climbing any hills anytime soon.

which brings me to my next point, guys who mtn bike wtf??? I'm out near everyday, lets get a group drive together for a group ride. hell fucking yes! I need more biking buddies because I seem to misplace mine...

jsut looked at the gary fisher you had up there. it looks good, you can def mtn bike that thing all over the place, up/down hills, you could also drop the seat a little bit and make it your bitch in the park. It looks good, and if you end up liking it go for a new rear air shock with a res to keep it from bottoming out if you want to dj or park ride it. just a suggestion.

wait i should have just read this god damn thread first bc i ended up anyway getting to into it. I didn't know you had a little more cash to spend on it. if you want a sick dj bike lmk, i have some friends on the east coast who own some shops that can get you an awesome fucking specialized bike. I'll be really jelous but I can get you 2011 p3 frames for around 350, and then you can build that thing up to be a solid solid hardtail.

for those in the industry finally specialized did the p series correct and decided it was time to lose all that god damn weight because i had the p2 cromo and i was disgusted, and fucked it up pretty quick, building up the 2011 p3, would be awesome because you can find sick parts all over boulder CL and the frame weight begins at aprox 6lbs… yeah serious business right there.

and now im going to stay away from this thread for a little while before I continue ranting and getting amped over someone elses bike/choice
