Looking for a good iX M20

Long story short the motor on an iX I picked up probably needs an overbore and complete rebuild. If you have any leads on an iX M20 in good shape or have one yourself give me a shout.

    Thanks.

Clark has a non-iX M20, but it's the same exact motor, you will just need to swap over oil pan stuff...

don't quote me on this, but I think the hole pattern for the oil pan might be a bit different as well as oil pump/pickup tube/dipstick type stuff.

        ^ That's about right.

I'm open to a non-ix M20 I suppose, just a little leery. Hopefully Clark can chime in about his motor.

Hole pattern *should* be the same, but if the pump/pickup/dipstick are different, just use the ones from the original iX.

              wrong.

It's not the same. the pan has a slightly different pattern. you have to drill and tap the block for the oil pan.

And not only is the oil pump different, but the intermediate shaft and oil pump drive gear needs to be swapped to ix-only parts. you have to remove the standard M20 pressure relief valve, the ix pump has it built in.

there is nowhere on a standard M20 block to put the ix dipstick. It's not a matter of a hole that's not drilled, the entire block casting is different. The place to drill the hole for the ix dipstick doesn't exist.

I guess my M20 would not be a suitable candidate then.

you can *make* it work. It's just not going to be a bolt-in deal. Either that or you won't have a dipstick, or oil pressure, and missing oil pan bolts...

                      Good to know...

You can get a re-manufactured block+pistons for $1570 new from BMW though. part number: 11111714840

The only thing that I am leery of is creating a hole for the dipstick. The rest of it ought to be relatively painless if what I've read online is correct - a couple holes need to be drilled/tapped and some parts swapped from my iX motor.

nando - You've looked at a few of these engines. What are your thoughts on installing a dipstick?

I'm betting most who have done this swap didn't put one in. you can drill a hole in the block, but the cast boss for it isn't there.
