yep. Long straight slot screwdriver, jam it in between a pulley bolt and the main fan nut, slip a wrench on there, quick sharp hammer strikes.

That's what I've been trying but I don't have the wrench.

Am I missing something? Harbor Freight seems to only have a 32mm "farm service wrench" which isn't long enough link. None of my local Sears for 50 miles carry a 32mm Craftsman wrench. Why is this so hard to source locally?

Edit: I found ONE in stock at a local Sears.. Nobody steal it!

Just borrow a bike tool kit!

Edit: The majority of them will have this:

          I don't know anyone with a 32mm pedal wrench :(

I found someone on Bf.c to borrow the wrench from, and Grand Thornton Sears has one if all else fails.

Yes, my belt was attached. If you have no belt on there, there won't be any resistance, so you'll have to use something to hold the water pump pulley. I would have just bought the specific tools, but I needed to replace my fan clutch very urgently and couldn't afford the shipping wait time. My fan clutch was slipping pretty badly; not sure if this was related to the nut coming loose so easily.

Mine came off very easy once I had the right tool.

Did you say you have an M42?

I may have a fan solution for you. I have an electric volvo fan that I adapted to fit the M42 radiator, and you will never have to mess with a mechanical fan again. It pulls more air, it is consistent (no overheating at an idle) and it looks cooler.

I apologize but this is the best pic I have of it, I was in the middle of a head gasket replacement.

So I swapped in an M20B25, so I don't need the fan any more so its for sale....

If you have access to an air hammer, it would only take a couple seconds to loosen it.

Thanks guys, I got it off with a 32mm wrench. I have an M50 and I already have a 16" Spal fan ready to go. I don't see how an air hammer and crow's foot would work in the low clearance area

They make an air hammer attachment with a long neck to reach down in there and the head is notched to sit on one of the edges of the nut.

And here is the crows foot one:
