10. Idaho Falls, Idaho
Cost of Living: 12% below average
City Population: 57,646
Median Household Income: $45,990 (U.S.: $52,762)
Median Home Value: $146,900 (U.S.: $186,200)
With the Teton Range to the east and overall housing expenses a full 29.2% below the national average, Idaho Falls residents can afford big views on tiny budgets. In fact, affordable housing is the single biggest contributor to the small city's low cost of living. Not only do homeowners reap the benefits of modest real estate prices, but apartment renters can enjoy the same panoramic views for just $655 a month, on average. (Nationwide, typical rent for an apartment is $870.) And yes, potatoes are cheap in Idaho Falls -- 26% cheaper than the national average, to be precise.
Get out here, I need friends.
Oh, and...

This will be a short post as I have the second longest day of the trip behind me, and the longest ahead of me. I have many stories to tell, but just a quick note about Bear Lake on the Utah/Idaho border. I didn't know it existed. It's glorious.
Say What!?! Yep, maybe I'm not as crazy as everyone was thinking.Comment

I finally have something a little relevant to say in this thread lol. I bought a 1989 silver 325i in Hayden (not to far from post falls). Its a 4 door with 198K miles but it runs perfectly! I live 15 min from Idaho border, but I finally can contribute :)

Ya I saw the thing. Its seriously been up for about 2 months. The dealership is probably so fed up with that E30 sitting, I'm sure they would gladly let it go for a ridiculous price. Maybe try going over there and giving a CASH lowball offer ($1500) and see what they say?

They are great. I live in the Potato Capital of the World. Potatoes cost about 26% below national level. There is a huge industry, lots of mechanical, fabrication, and transportation/storage infrastructure in my area, all devoted to the potato.
(I grew up loving potatoes, it was either an omen, or a self fulfilling prophesy.)Comment
