Anyone care to hook me up with an oil pressure test in Portland?

I'll do the work if you let me borrow the tester for a moment. After a complete rebuild of my S50 I still have lifter noise... very frustrating, but before I buy lifters I want to check my oil pressure in case the real culprit is an internal leak and pressure loss.

So I believe in good tools and have a snap on one somewhere in the garage as well. But for these "maybe" situations, I will venture out of my comfort zone, and suggest just to go get the harbor freight tool for a one time use. If oil pressure is indeed your problem, you can always get a nicer tool down the road.

Run a quart of ATF for a little while, and the detergents in it should clean any gunk out of the lifters. I'd try that fist. Oil pressure readings at the point of the pressure sensor are probably not a good indicator of the pressure in the lifters.

That sucks man. I would give it a while to let everything break in before you jump to conclusions. Sucks that you're still having an issue though!

              I've been searching... and searching...

a guy on bimmerforums recently shared his experience with incurable ticking after a rebuild, it turned out that his upper chain tensioner was allowing pressure to escape past the cylinder, and replacing that solved the problem:

Bimmerforums is the preferred online BMW Forum and community for BMW owners. At Bimmerforums, you will find technical how-to information maintenance specifics audio advice wheel and tire combinations and model specific details not found anywhere else. Our professionals are here to help make sure you find the answers you need to your questions and our community is here to help other brainstorm ideas for the future.

it's only a $50 part but requires going in past the vanos again, so I want to confirm this idea. oil pressure taken at the filter housing should reflect overall pressure enough to discern a problem.

Keith, I'll PM you later today about it, that would be great :)

Actually, every time I hear that saying all I can think of is this guy:

you might have to REALLY be a Simpson's nerd to know that one.
