I'll do the work if you let me borrow the tester for a moment. After a complete rebuild of my S50 I still have lifter noise... very frustrating, but before I buy lifters I want to check my oil pressure in case the real culprit is an internal leak and pressure loss.
Anyone care to hook me up with an oil pressure test in Portland?

So I believe in good tools and have a snap on one somewhere in the garage as well. But for these "maybe" situations, I will venture out of my comfort zone, and suggest just to go get the harbor freight tool for a one time use. If oil pressure is indeed your problem, you can always get a nicer tool down the road.Comment

Run a quart of ATF for a little while, and the detergents in it should clean any gunk out of the lifters. I'd try that fist. Oil pressure readings at the point of the pressure sensor are probably not a good indicator of the pressure in the lifters.Originally posted by Grueliusand i do not know what bugg brakes are.Comment

I've been searching... and searching...
a guy on bimmerforums recently shared his experience with incurable ticking after a rebuild, it turned out that his upper chain tensioner was allowing pressure to escape past the cylinder, and replacing that solved the problem:

it's only a $50 part but requires going in past the vanos again, so I want to confirm this idea. oil pressure taken at the filter housing should reflect overall pressure enough to discern a problem.
Keith, I'll PM you later today about it, that would be great :)Comment
