Just got back. I had a great time. Went snowboarding at Mt hood meadows. I also got to hit up a little indoor concrete skatepark.

Otherwise, I am getting prepared to start seriously searching for jobs in the area. My wife is on board. We wither want to live in downtown or just west of downtown in the alphabet district.

To follow up on the concersation above - Devil's point did not disappoint. Union jacks sucked. Lucky devil lounge was OK. Portland prime was probably the best dinner I've ever had. Overall I had a blast. I love Portland.

Alphabet District like NW 23rd area?

Where downtown have you looked? South Waterfront has some good deals now too.

Yeah, up there. I guess by uptown billiards and elephant deli...that's the alphabet district, right? Either way, just west of downtown - north or south.

I just looked casually to make sure I could find something inside of my budget. As it turns out a lot of the buildings are income restricted and I won't even qualify. It also depends on where my wife and I find jobs.

Ha, I just ate at Elephant's a few days ago. One of my best friends lives across the street. Definitely a cool 'hood. I lived up there for three years after college. Though it's sometimes referred to as the Alphabet District, most just call it Northwest Portland. Everybody will know exactly what part of the city you're referring to.

I would do A LOT of research and exercise extreme caution before moving into a place downtown (Southwest Portland). There are a few nice buildings, but like you said, there's a lot of Section 8 and Income-Restricted buildings. I like urban living, but SW is just too loud/busy, and aside from a few places to shop, there's really not a lot to do.

Look on Vista too. It's what NW 23rd turns into when it crosses Burnside. There are some cool buildings right there.

If either of you lands a job at OHSU, I'd really look into the South Waterfront. There's a bunch of NICE buildings down there that are hurting for occupants.

I'm in portland for 1 year, the income restricted buildings were like disappointment after disappointment. downtown rent jumps to $1250+ if you make decent money. since I'm here temporarily, I didn't want to settle for a crappy apartment in a "meh" area, and I really wanted a garage.

got lucky on a craigslist find, a girl trying to get out of a lease in a new building in the south waterfront. the starting rent was significantly less than what they ask for now so I jumped on a "cozy" 2nd-floor pseudo-bedroom studio. the neighborhood is new but filled with highrises and expensive cars, so it gets bonus points for the ambiance. streetcar access is a plus, and it has a good urban feel while being quiet at the same time. there's an excellent shop (matrix integrated) right there as well. luckily I commute away from downtown, so traffic is not a huge deal. I could see the south waterfront becoming a pretty successful portland project if they can get enough tenants for the residences and get some more businesses to set up locations there.

Yeah, the best places I've found so far are at the south waterfront. They are the nicest and have relatively good prices. I'm down with a studio or 1 bedroom but will need 2 parking spaces and probably a storage unit. If I can find a nice house I'd take it - but the ones I've seen that are in my price range suck.

Storage unit may be an issue down there, but you should be able to find a tandem spot (or two separate spots) in any of the buildings pretty easily.

Which towers were you looking at?
